For safe queens and range guns plus the value will only go up I'd buy both s&w n frames at that cost. For shooters and hunters I go with ruger RedHawks.

Get that nickel finish.

The only remaining .44 I want is a 5" 629-4 Classic. There was recently a nice one in the classifieds, but I hesitated.

I have:
629-1 3" X2
629-2 Mountain Revolver
629-4 Mountain Gun X2
29-5 8 3/8" Classic
629-4 6.5" Classic

I have always preferred the esthetic of the 6.5" Barrel over the 5". I also like Blue the best, but like owning Nickel models also. So my Nickel 29 is an 8 3/8" but my blue is a 6.5. If I was a hunter, I might want a 629, but to me, it is just not "The Classic 29"

I never buy nickel guns because once they start to show age they can get cloudy, subject to chip and peel, etc. The 5" stainless would be my pick but if all you are going to do is hide it in the safe, what's the point?

I have a chance to buy another Smith & Wesson 44 magnum one is a Smith & Wesson 29 - 2 nickel 6 and 1/2 in Barrel pinned and recessed and the other is a Smith & Wesson 629 - 3 with a 5 inch barrel between these two which one would you buy 29 - 2 is like $100 less than the 629 - 3?
Depends what you gonna do with it. If for collection whatever you want or missing in your collection.

If for shooting, 629-3 all the way. It's just better revolver, it has endurance package, and according to some sources, with -3 series S&W improved quality introducing CNC machining, and using stronger steel on some critical parts. To identify revolvers with endurance package, without opening cylinder, look for elongated cylinder stop notches:

Revolver with endurance package, longer cylinder stop notch

No endurance package, shorter cylinder stop notch

However, if you really want the best S&W 29/629, look for CLASSIC DX:

"Smith & Wesson DX Series

At 25 yards, they were all capable of delivering tight one-hole groups with at least one good commercial load and at 50, they never seemed to run outside of the 1.5-inch mark."

American Rifleman | Smith & Wesson DX Series

Right on! If revolver is not stainless, blue over plated one any time, just my .2 cents.
