Stuck between the 1, the 1s, and 1HL. This is for an M&P9, night IDPA/USPSA matches, and home defense. Prices are all pretty close. Just not sure if the HL is overkill, and what the difference between the 1 and 1s is. Thanks!

I have some 1's and 1s's. I think the HL is too big and overkill. I can't really ever seeing strobing someone, but hey it's an option now.

I always thought the strobe was ridiculous ... but I bought a $40 Nebo PROTEC HP190 from Walmart which had a strobe on it, and man it's blinding!

Same with my Lasermax Genesis micro green laser which strobes. It's not so much for fun but for the disorienting effect of the strobing in the face of a badguy.

As long as a price is even I'd go with a strobe version. The ONLY concern is, in the example of my Lasermax Genesis, it ONLY strobes. I wasn't aware of that when I got it. But i got it brand new in an open box for $65 bucks, vs $2-$250.. so ... can't complain.

Running the $40 Nebo PROTEC HP190 on my M&P 9mm. I have been hammering on it for almost a year now and it is going strong. Light is plenty bright for hand gun distance, and the strobe is a plus to have.

I have three X300 Ultras, two X300s, a TLR-2 (350lumen), TLR-2G, and a few hand-held lights mounted on rifles and shotguns.

I've been teaching low light tactics for years and have written my department's low-light tactics manual and training policy.

GET THE TLR-1HL!!!!

The beam profile is awesome and having been a doubting Thomas about high-lumen handgun lights... They work. They work so well that my duty gun, on which I depend my life, has a 500 lumen X300 Ultra. I have a couple hand-held lights that are between 900-1000 lumens (Surefire P3X and C2 with Sportac Triple drop-in) and neither are "too much" light.

I'd rather spend a bit more for reputation and quality. I'm leaning towards the HL because the other two just seem the same with the S being slightly brighter. They all have strobes I think.

ETA: never mind, read their fact sheet wrong. The 1 and 1s share a fact sheet. Not both strobe. So its between the S and HL, because I'd rather have the strobe and not need it...

The 1S and the HL both have strobe (which can be shut off). I'm not a big fan because I think it over-complicates what should be as simple as possible. I did use a strobe for a while, and I think that it could have a use down the line with proper switching/user interface. In our training, I don't force anyone to turn off the strobe function, but I make students aware that I know how to turn it off. I've never had a strobe make it through the training without being shut off. It's too easy to activate inadvertently, causing distraction to the shooter (and other shooters on the same team).

The 1S is still bright, probably plenty bright, but the HL has a better beam profile (TIR lens) with a wide bright beam, which is an advantage in seeing what needs to be identified while minimizing the need to point the handgun directly at the person/object.
