Hi all,

I have not posted here for quite a while, but I am baack!

I have a question.

I own two Model 29s. They are both in excellent condition. One is a six inch 29-4, and the other is an 8 inch 29-2.

I have a friend that has a beautiful 1970's vintage Remington 1100 semi-auto 12 gauge shotgun.

I am thinking about offering him a trade for one of my 29s.

My question is WHICH of the 29s would be a better trade for me. Is one more valuable than the other? I would say they are both in 95% condition, as is the Remington shotgun.

I dont want to trade, and then KICK myself for letting a 29 go that I shouldnt have.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you all!

The six-inch gun is considerably more practical to own. The long tom might be worth more.

How are you evaluating the matter?

Possibly you might sell one and have more than enough for the M-1100?

You do know the obvious answer, right?

The only thing that makes sense is to keep both the 29s and buy the Remington outright. You will eventually kick yourself no matter which one you trade.

I agree with redlevel. Never sell or trade anything. I hear too many stories of seller's remorse.

If you like one more than the other, that is the one to keep. If you don't use either of them, then it is just a matter of looking up their values in the latest Blue Book.

If it's not a Parker Bros. or the like, there is no shotgun in the world worth trading a Smith for.

I would keep the 29's and buy the 1100 outright. Good vintage Smith 29's are getting harder to find while Remington 1100's are not. At least that's the way it is in my area.

I recently bought a 1979 vintage 1100 with vent rib for $322 out the door from a gun shop. Either 29 you have is worth 2 or 3 1100s unless they are tournament grade or other special grade.
+1 on buy it outright and keep the 29s.

Trading a decent Model 29 for an 1100 in a straight trade is just plain nuts. Unless it's for my 1100!

Seriously, if someone offered me a decent 29 for an 1100 straight up, I wouldn't do it. I'd be worried there was something seriously wrong or I'd feel like such a cheat it would spoil the deal for me. I'd have to give the guy the 1100 + some money.

Hi All,

I truly appreciate all of your responses. After thinking about it all day, and reading all of your responses I have decided NOT to trade EITHER of my 29s away. They truly are too nice to part with, even if I rarely shoot them. I KNOW I would KICK myself if I traded one of them away.

Thank you all for helping me realize the folly of the trading idea!

Sorry, but a mid-1970s 1100 is not worth either of those Smiths! The 1100 is probably not useable today for hunting as it is pre-steel (no lead) build and also probably not a magnum length chamber.
