In 1959 one of my favorite actors and personal heros made starred in a TV series called Whispering Smith, it is about a cowboy detective stationed in Denver it has 25 episodes.

The Star is Audie Murphy, the series will be released on DVD on 4/20/10, I pre ordered it yesterday. It has been compared to Have gun Will Travel and as a thinking man's western.

In the 1890's the real Whispering Smith and some other guys were hired to track down train robbers Sontag and Evans. In the hills east of Fresno they walked up to a cabin to ask the owner if these guys have been around. The bad guys were in the cabin and opened up on the lawmen killing two. Whispering Smith took off dropping his gun while the two Indian guides shot back from behind rocks.
The train Robbers excaped. It was real embarrassing for Smith, but they were really caught by surprise.
The train robbers were later caught in an exact reversal situation at another cabin later. Smith wasn't involved here.
There was an Alan Ladd movie about Smith, also. Not so hot.
