There are boots and then there are boots. Below is a pair of Buffalo Boots I had hand made and hand fitted in Seattle about 25 years ago. Yeah, they are expensive, about $300 back then, but you get what you pay for in terms of boots. I wear these all the time working on the ranch and they have been climbing the mountains in Idaho for years. Pretty good shape for the hundreds of miles they have seen and the terrain they have been over.
Unfortunately, the Buffalo Boot company went out of business, HOWEVER, White Boots out of Spokane, are identical in style and quality.

I have worn boots all of my 40+ years, and about 7 years ago I upgraded to Ostrich and will never go with another skin as they are the most comfortable boot I have ever put on my foot. You might not think this is a tough hide, but the pair I bought 7 years ago are still in service and I wear them 3 to 4 times a week. They have been retreaded about 4 times. I would think my foot is pretty wide, since the 13D's support my 6'5" frame. I would go with Tony Lama and if the full quill is too expensive you can get the belly which should be around $200.
I think the original Nocona company has been out of business for several years and the name was bought by someone, maybe Justin. I've got a pair of deer skin Nocona's I bought in Ft. Collins, CO at least 15 years ago, they are without a doubt the most comfortable boots I have ever owned. Unfortunately, the leather is so soft at has torn at the toes and looks awful and the cobbler says there's no way to fix it. I've tried to find some similar boots, but without any luck.
I have a couple of pairs of Lusshese as well and while they are good boots, they are what I usually wear, they still can't compare to those old Nocona's for comfort.
transalpian, I am embarrassed to say that my Ariats are made in China. I did not know that when I purchased them on recommendation from a friend. I guess they have gone the way of many companies. Mine are heavey oil tanned cowhide, with the spur strap and ledge on the heel for spurs. I will not vouch for running true to size, for I find I must try on whatever brand I buy.
Guess I am due for a new pair and will downgrade these to work boots. I'll probably go back to Boulet, made in Canada, or Nacona's. I don't like to buy Chinese.

Dave you are from the old school! White's heck it takes a lifetime to break them in and another lifetime to wear them out, and then White's will rebuild them. first White I ever saw was a steer roper and tripper name

Note: I smiled when I asked him that. he actually did some location work for Peckinpah when he wasn't terrorizing everybody else. Packers he said with disdain. I later bought a pair of Smoke Jumpers they are still somewhere. Can't kill them. I'm afraid to bury them I know they will come back and haunt me. Wilson Bowman's of Livingston Mt aren't bad If you can't afford Weinkaufs, Kerrville Tx.

In the yard any old slip-on boot will do. But in the mountains, I like lace-up high top packers. Fancy boots are for barbeques and church.
I didn't know that Drews Men's Store had a web site. I bought my Whites from them in 1992 and the boots are still going strong. I just walked into the store and they happened to have a pair of packers that fit me. I understand that the price is about a C note more than then. I happen to live in Klamath Falls, so the store is convenient.

+1000000 for the Whites Packers, they are great, the most comfortable boots I have ever worn. They are costly, but they are made to fit your foot. Super Boots.
Grizzly Boot company in Missoula, MT also makes boots...like the smoke jumpers, etc.
Whites are great...My brother wears those all the time. When they are totally thrashed, send them in for a rebuild and you can not believe the job they do on them. Plus, you can design your own boot.
Make sure you get measured...EVERY time you get new boots or shoes. Feet keep growing, flattening and changing all the time. Even if you want to order online, shop locally and get your foot measured, try the brand you're looking at if you can to be sure.
And, if you can afford it, buy more than one pair, so you can alternate days between wearings. It will help them last longer. Buy the 'care and upkeep' package (polish, cleaner, waterproofer, whatever)...it doesn't make any more sense to wear a boot all the time and not take care of the leather than it does to not take care of your gun. Also buy a bottle of the appropriate heel and sole 'dressing'..it's a liquid dye type product in a small bottle with a dauber. It will help keep the edges of the sole of the boot in good condition, help them to last longer, AND it looks good. Even if I don't have time to polish my boots, a quick trip around the sole with that dauber helps make them look nice. usually comes in Black and brown, match it to the sole, and match leather sole to leather sole dressing, rubber soles to rubber sole dressing. Also... boots tend to get a wear mark on the back of the heel from driving, and you can recolor that with the sole dressing.
Polish frequently...it keeps the leather soft, and helps make them wear longer. If you wear them so long that the finish is worn off before you polish them, they won't have any waterproof qualities, resist stains or anything.
boot sox are nice... some like Thorlos or Justin have an extra thick sole for comfort, and are regular sock on all the rest of the foot for fit. Some of the Thorlos have an additional support band woven in around the instep of the foot that is quite comfortable, too. Buy sox longer than your boot top, that way they won't scrunch down, wad up and end up uncomfortable.

Except in the worst heat of summer, and sometimes then if I'm going to be mostly indoors, I wear Ariats. Yes, it's cheating a bit if you're talking to guys that want "real" boots, but I love the combination of boot look and technology sole feel. Their Cobalt soles feel great, even after a day on concrete.

They've made boots for 3 generations of my family. I have a pair that I just picked up from resole that were made in 1988.
The shoe shop repair guy from my hometown always said Luchesse was the best. Certainly very popular in South Texas. Rios of mercedes also made/makes good boots. I think the family still has the business open. Willie Lusk of Lubbock was another good maker, he died many years ago as far as I know.
