Who is your favorite Sherlock Holmes?

As far as I'm concerned Jeremy Brett was the definitive Sherlock Holmes. I was about 11 when his portrayal of Holmes started running on the old PBS "Mystery" series (hosted by Vincent Price). I was an instant fan of the show, and had soon read all the stories. I have all the episodes on DVD.

The original "Mystery" on PBS in the 80's and 90's was really the best thing on TV. "Poirot", "Miss Marple", "Morse", "Reilly Ace of Spies", "Charters and Caldicott", "Partners in Crime", the list goes on forever. It was my favorite program as a kid.

By the way, the late Joan Hickson was the definitive Miss Marple.

I did like Jeremy Brett, but my favorite is Basil Rathbone.
Last night I watched "Mr. Holmes" with Ian Makellen as Sherlock in his 90's keeping bees and suffering memory loss. I liked it, but Basil is the one I'd call when "the game is afoot".

Basil Rathbone will be my favorite. Brett is excellent. I still would rather grab a print book on a cold winter day and let my imagination take over.

Jeremy Brett (PBS) is the DEFINITIVE Holmes! He could express volumes with the smallest twitch of the lip, or slightly raised eyebrow. The most intelligent portrayal on any screen.

That IS Sherlock Homes to me! I have all the PBS on DVD's. And close to the original stores as possible.

There are things about the Granada series that did not date well, but even then Jeremy Brett is Sherlock Holmes to me. Even today, when I read the material, I'm seeing Brett.

I was a little kid when they started airing those in the 80s, and the Brett version is one of the few shows I can remember the whole family getting together to watch.

Jeremy Brett, for sure. I did grow up on reruns of Basil Rathbone and enjoyed his Holmes, but Mr Brett gave such life to the character.

Same for me.

Grew up watching Basil and enjoying him.

Watched Brett and KNEW - he's the man!

I read all the books as a kid and IMO, the Brett series is truest in both story line and acting by Brett.

That said, Rathbone was good, very good - just not AS good as Brett.
