I was looking for SR4756, since I read on here about how good it is for .38+P reloads (THE LOAD in specific). I can't find SR4756 but have found IMR4756. Same stuff? Thanks.

It's IMR SR-4756. IMR Legendary Powders is the company that makes it (founded by DuPont - IMR used to stand for "improved military rifle"): SR is part of the name (used to signify "Sporting Rifle," but I wouldn't really consider SR-4756 or SR-7625 rifle powders) but is usually left out by folks talking about it (who tend to just say "4756").

THE LOAD is not a .38 Special +P loading: it exceeds SAAMI .38 Special +P pressures. If you don't understand this (and what that means) already, I'd strongly advise that you learn more before experimenting.

Thanks, Erich. I understand about THE LOAD and how hot it is and, rest assured, it will be approached with caution.

Good deal!

Maybe, in the spirit of "THE LOAD", we should rename SR4756 "THE POWDER THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED"...(Sorry, all you Harry Potter fans...) and Speer #8 as maybe "THE BOOK OF THE DEAD" (for all you Mummy fans).

Sorry, it's a snow day and the kids are home watching movies...

I believe that the Speer # 8 has long (far before THE LOAD fracas) been known as "The Hellfire and Brimstone Manual."

It's 76° here, Chuck, and sunny! Come on over! We can hit the range!

Chuck,

I am experimenting with "THE POWDER" in the 40S&W now. It gave some impressive results in the original trials and I want to see just what it will do in this caliber.

Rest assured, ALL of my data will be in alignment with current data!

p.s. I am going to be shooting it in a new Glock 22. Stand by for some reports!

My education into loading the 40 S&W continues then. I haven't loaded the first one yet since everyone has dies on backorder. And yes, I will start out small and work my way up once I get started. I just enjoy reading what you experienced guys are up to with calibers I am or will be loading.

I had a great time with THE LOAD last summer. Took out my trusty Outdoorsman, bought a can of the SR-4756 and a copy of Speer #8 I found at a gunshow in Richmond and cast a slew of RCBS 38-150 KTs. Found that my Remington small pistol primers weren't up to the task with THE LOAD and found myself with flattened and pierced primers. Swapped them out with WSP and it shot fine.

4756 is considered to be a flake and it certainly is that, but it isn't a real flat Frisbee flake, like Unique.

I recently loaded some .45 ACP with 4756 and had the load cut down to 5.2 gr with a 185 gr H&G #68 clone. It was very accurate and made finding my brass very easy, since it wouldn't cycle the action.

It also shot very low, but I really can't complain about it being real dirty.

I've used double that amount of 4756 with a heavier bullet, but I only shoot those in a revolver.

My point is, it's a very versatile powder in medium capacity cases.

The reason I used 5.2 gr in .45 ACP was just because that's what I had it set at for .38 Specials with that same 38-150-KT Chuck was using.

The 38-150-KTs are just practice loads for my baby girl, who is 35 now.

you experienced guys

Well, thanks for the kind words. Not so sure just how "experienced" I am but I have learned a lot from those that are on this forum.

SR4756 is a great powder. It isn't and end all but if I could have only one powder for the handgun calibers I load for, it would sure be one of the top ones on the list.

I haven't made any real "weenie" loads like Paul but I have made mid-range to smoking hot loads in 38spl to 44mag with some real "whompers" in 240gr LSWC 45AR/ACP loads. If I remember correctly I was getting near 1100fps out of a 4" M625JM with it.

I loaded some 9mm(wasn't too impressed) and some low end 40S&W that I listed on this forum somewhere. They shot well and I want to see what jacking them up will do. Again, all within modern data.

Erich;
It is sure NOT 76 degrees here today. It's going to 5 degrees by morning

I hate to be wishing my life away, but I am sure ready for warmer weather!

I feel your pain Dale and am envious Erich. It's -3 degrees F here this morning but is going to warm to mid 30's later in the week. Still have the indoor range nearby where I shoot the K-22's. That's the best we have here for a while, there's still 3' of snow in the woods. I'm doing quite a bit of handloading and bullet casting getting ready for spring. Greg

Either that, or "THE BOOK OF COUNTED SORROWS."

Erich;
I really shouldn't complain about the weather. This has just been a bad winter, for us. However, we don't have nearly the bad weather that others do. Everything is relative, I guess. We have such variable weather - a week ago it was in the sixties, then this cold snap. It just teases us.

I'll be a lot closer to you in a couple of weeks. My daughter and her family live in Salt Lake City, UT. We'll be flying out there in a couple of weeks. We'll only have a week there but I'll be thinking of you in those nice warm temperatures.
