I have a lot of mixed headstamp 45 acp brass that I will be loading for plinking rounds. I would rather not sort it by headstamp. Do any of you load for 45 with mixed HS brass? My CCW loads are factory rounds, I am just wanting to load the practice/target rounds in the mixed.

I have a variety of 45 brass (range p/u).

it all goes in and out without any problems.

mainly out of 1911s.

I don't sort and never have. I have several thousand rounds of .45 and have no idea as to the makers. I do not pick up Amerc or steel cases.

I used to sort my pistol brass. Then I realized it was a purely obsessive exercise with no practical benefits.

Besides - I didn't have the time for that nonsense once I started shooting somewhat seriously. I now use the time to feed the Dillon.

I have a couple thousand Winchester cases segregated for use in revolver only, but I'll run anything through the autos.

when i shot bullseye i sorted brass but now
i shoot at close range and don't need to. most guns and bullets will shoot good at 15yds. and under very good. when you go to 50yds. good guns and good ammo are a must. don

I sort ONLY to keep the SP brass out of the mix. Winchester NT & Fiochi (sp?) NT brass has the dreaded small primer pockets which can slow down the works in short order.

I cull it and set it aside.

I also cull S&B and military brass...nothing wrong with it, it just has a smidgen tighter pocket that can slow down production.

I set it aside also.

I've given a fair about of S&B, Military & NT brass away to those who use it.

Regular sorting (which I would guess you were referring to)...no, I don't bother. It's a step I don't need in the process. A look at my reloads will confirm I do not segregate brass by head-stamp or plating (the nickel stuff is right there with the unplated brass). Like HAWKEYE10 mentioned, most of my shooting is at 15-25 yards...no need for pin-point accuracy...I couldn't shoot well enough to make any difference if every piece were sorted by manufacture, trimmed to length & dipped in magic bulls-eye oil.

I sort, I only use WW brass, no nickle. I sort every caliber. But once it's sorted, I do not need to do it again. If I pick up range brass, I only pick up WW and leave the rest.
Just my way.

I certainly recommend sorting .45 ACP brass for slow-fire shooting at 50 yards. Different brands will likely result in varying cartridge lengths which will necessitate miking case lengths to ensure a proper and consistent crimp. I have to admit that I could never get adequate accuracy at the 50-yard line with cast lead bullets; I had to resort to jacketed SWC bullets to be able to consistently hold the X-ring. At the short line (25 yards), 10-ring and even X-ring accuracy is easier to achieve and sorting may not be necessary, depending upon the variety of brass you have in your stockpile.

I always sort my brass by head stamp. Especially .45 ACP, and most imprtantly if used in a revolver.

Accuracy will be better if you use one brand of brass. So will consisstency in loading including OAL. Case capacity changes from brand to brand as well so, separate them and run them in batches.

Well, I "sorta sort."

The Amerc, small primer, foreign military, damaged and overused cases all go out.

The only time I sort down to a specific American mfg headstamp is for bullseye loading with light charges.

For major power loads used in IDPA, USPSA, and steel, I can't tell the difference among the major US manufacturers. However, at least one shooter at our range buys all one brand and only uses them once.

Thanks for all the input......I sorted! I did not have but a mere 1300 cases so I sorted them out R-P, Winchester, Federal and military. All the others I left mixed although I think I will go back through them for the Speer, I believe there is 100+ of them in the mix. I am doing all this sorting, sizing and tumbling and I do not even have a .45....YET!!! It is next on my list in the very near future.

I do sort out the AMERC brass to the scrap heap and the S&B brass for lost brass matches. If I were shooting bullseye at 50 yards then I would use only one manufacturers brass.

I sorted brass when I shot Bullseye matches.
I used WCC brass for match loads and everything else for practice.

For pins, steel, three gun etc, I loaded up whatever I had. No problems.

I have thousands (read many) of 45acp brass and I don't sort. I do toss the Wolf, aluminum cases and anything that looks like junk and give it all a good "eyeing" before I relaod but thats about it.

I sort my brass mainly to segregate the less desirable brass from the "good" brass.

If I'm shooting where there will be a high loss rate, I use S&B, PMP, Aquila and etc.

I try to keep from losing "good" brass, R-P and W-W and maybe Federal.
