WHP Stamp

Just picked up a 686 no dash 4" with a WHP XXXXXX stamp on the left
side of the frame below the cylinder. Obviously a police issue. Just curious from what agency. Washington should be WSP and I think they were still using the model 28. I might be wrong on that.

Any ideas.

Winthrop Harbor Police Department, it's in Illinois.

Very few departments would have issued a M-696 or any other .44 Special. I doubt it was WI, WY, WA, or any such major agency.

If you find out, let us know. You may have to letter the gun.
