Why 1 7/8?

The next one up the line is the J-Frame Model 640-1 that is a whopping 2.125 inches............

Maybe someone from S&W can chime in here on possible reasons.

C'mon people. It's a 2" barrel, generally speaking. Who gives a hoot. We all know it is is. I like short barreled guns. My brother always said, "short barrel, short penis.". I'm thinking he's right!

Well, my guess is that they were trying to make the barrel as short as is functionally possible.
Maybe 1.875 inch is the minimum for good extraction.
Its near 48 mm, so that doesn't go anywhere.

Best,
Rick

Of course they also make a 2-1/8" barrel - go figure

That is for the Magnum barrels. They have longer cases, so the extra length makes up for the bullet being further forward towards the barrel. Approximately the same distance from the base of the bullet to the end of the barrel. Of, course, if Special cases are used, the bullet has further to travel in the Magnum barrel length. An extra 10 FPS?

Best,
Rick

I actually think this is closer to being correct than the other explanations. S&W just isn't all that concerned about it. Close enough is good enough for them.

Kind of sad if you think too much about it,
Dave

1 7/8" was the length of founder Daniel B. Wesson's right thumb, from tip to first knuckle.
I will not, however, comment on which part of his anatomy was 8 3/8". After all, this IS a family forum.

Hell, my nose is that long. But I guess that would scare a lot of folks on a family forum.

Never mind. :o:D
