Why buy a S&W AR??

stk622...you seem to have some sort of personal downer on M&P15s or something. I'm not saying they are the best AR out there, but the current CDNN deal makes them excellent value for money. My M&P15T has been 100% reliable after a couple of thousand rounds now, on all kinds of ammo, and is accurate. That'll do me. For people who care about such things, it also ain't a bad looking piece.

They might have been overpriced initially, but especially lately they have dropped massively in price.

No------ I don't. If you read my posts, you can see I have sold every type of AR ( commercially made) that's made. I sent back the most DPMS's, (hence the reason I called THEM junk)( someone else on here said I called the Smith junk)Then Rock Rivers, Two Major PDs here switched BACK to Colts after their experiment with Bushmaster..... when you've sold and handled as well as shot them all, talk to me. I don't know everything. The charts and the stats don't lie.

DEALER COST ON A COLT IS 100 DOLLARS MORE THAN SMITH. Smith came down in price for a reason. They were tanking. No one wanted one.

Another post about all the things you can change on the Smith and the cost made me actually laugh. Your in it for MORE than a Colt then, and nearing the upper priced ones. And you essentially took a Smith and built a Colt.

Smith joined the game late and built a lower end AR at high end prices. It bit them. Out of all the ARs out there....even the JUNK..... the wholesalers I had dealt with sold the LEAST Smiths.

I'm done with this thread. It wasn't meant to bash Smiths great AR! Stag makes the lower for them btw. OK Industries makes the Mags.

How bout those Rugers huh? There's another great deal.

My last two cents on the subject and then I am done. For me I want a rifle with folding sights and a rail. The M&P 15T comes with both of those standard. I can get the M&P 15T from a local dealer for about $1400 out the door. A colt LE6920will run me about $1400 as well, but I will then be out another $400 to add a Troy Industries rail and sights. For me the only immediate issues I see with the M&P is the bolt carrier and that is a relatively cheap fix. So in the long run the M&P is the more economical solution. IMO.

To follow gunfighter, 15T was better suited and economical compared to adding the rails and sights. I was able to T&E the Bushmaster which had jamming issues, RRA which was overpriced, Colt which did not have rails , and the 15T and standard model.

It was then between RRA and 15T and for $300 cheaper and 5 free PMAGS the 15T won. I have no regrets, looks great and functions well. Price was $1330 if my memory recalls correct, $100 off the box price for customer loyalty :)

I just received my S&W M&P 15OR from CDNN. It ws $699+shipping + 3% Credit Card fee + FFL transfer fee - $100 S&W rebate, so my total cost was just under $660 total, complete. I did have to add MagPul MBUS sights to complete the rifle.
From "the chart" all I see that S&W lacks is:

1) M16 bolt carrier - I don't see this as a big deal. I can get a M16 bolt if I ever feel the need. But it is a slight minus to S&W. Note, chart shows same for LMT.
2) MPI barrel, pressure test barrel - The S&W is 4140 steel, and it is chromed. I think it will be fine for non-full auto purposes. But again, true, a harder steel would be preferable.
3) H Buffer - Don't care. Easy to replace and cheap if I do. Note the LMT is the same, and much more expensive.
4) 1:7 twist - Most of the bullets I find cheap are 50 or 55 grain which are fine with the 1:9 twist.

stk622 - "OK Industries makes the Mags." - maybe they used to. Mine came with a 30 round MagPul pMag. That mag has taught me to love "plastic" mags:-).
"Stag makes the lower for them btw." - I have read articles that say that was true at first, but no longer. I don't know what the fact is.

So the only real difference I see in the chart between LMT and S&W is LMT seems to use a higher grade barrel.

I don't see any that score much better, without costing a lot more than I paid.
I think my M&P15OR for $600 is a great gun and that it was a fantastic value. I would not ever pay the full $1209 retail for it, but who would?
Whose AR scores much better and can be bought for $600 or less? I don't think you have any hope of getting any LMT rifle new (or maybe even used) in that (my) price range. Heck I've never seen one of their uppers in that price range.

I have not been much of a Colt AR fan since the time the gov't. loaned me one in 1967 that worked just a bit more than occasionally.

Yes, 40+ years is a long time to hold a grudge!

I think this thread has turned into a Ford vs. Chevy thing in which there is no definitive answer. Why don't we argue about the relative merits of redheads vs. blondes instead?

Me? I have a 15T which shoots way better than I do. A couple thousand rounds by now w/ no problems at all. I like it...a lot! And redheads have a lot of advantages, too.

.....

"Merits of redheads vs. blonds", is there a CHART for that? :D And what about Brunettes? I think they are way under rated. And how do you score the clones (only blond by bleach)? You sure you want to start this topic?:)

Here is the reason to buy a COLT or a Daniel Defense ( go with Colt)

Everyone thinks "All AR's are the same".... they aren't. Smith is way overpriced for what you DON'T get.
Scroll to bottom and look at the MANY differences.... you get what you pay for. I sold more Colts, and sent BACK more DPMS ( junk) Rock River ( Junk) and Stags than I can tell you about.

M4 CHART

That chart has some great information.:)

After looking at the manufacturers websites I'm thinking of going with a Bravocompany bolt assembly to fix a binding extractor issue on my M&P15. They do show it being in stock online, which is a plus.

Is their quality as good as the specifications would indicate?

Cabela's offer...

I just paid my Cabela's Club Visa bill, and there was a flyer included in it, 'Exclusive Offer' for Cabela's Club members, S&W M&P15 Performance Center SA Rifle, regular price $1699.99, Club Price $1,399.99 plus receiving $100 Cabelas' bucks for next purchase...
I look at the PC section of the S&W site and see msrp of $1967 for M&P15PC.
Is this worth looking into? I have been thinking of acquiring a .223 for 100 yard target shooting at our club, but was thinking in terms of a bolt action, like a CZ, have no experience with ARs. ????

The best AR you can buy, is the one YOU like, period. Do the research, and you can make an educated decision. Build one yourself, that is the most fun way to get an AR you want.

If a lot of guys are using Arms like the bolt CZ in that club...you MAY want to look into .243 caliber for that! .243 is a wicked nice round!

I like my MOE. I've changed the following on it:

0) Replaced MOE stock with Magpul CTR stock

1) Replaced MOE pistol grip with CAA pistol grip

2) Replaced rear BUIS with Troy folding battle sight

3) Replaced standard front sight post with Yankee-Hill folding sight on gas block

4) Replaced A2 flash hider with Smith Vortex G6-A2

5) Replaced flat trigger guard with Magpul enhanced trigger guard

6) Added Magpul ASAP sling adapter

7) Added Magpul VFG

The only thing left is Duracoat camo paint, and it will look something like this:
