why do people block out the serial number of a gun online?

I teach in a local college. I teach more or less the same stuff every semester. Why? Well, I have a different bunch of students every semester. Well, mostly. Sometimes they have to go through several times to get it straight, but you see what I mean.

Here I'm the student, and I am grateful to all of the folks who answer my questions and put up with my posts that may be repetitions of past posts.

Every day I learn stuff here, and occasionally share something with someone else. Chief38 hits the nail right on the head. I'm not just starting out in the gun collecting area, but I am just starting out in the forum area!!

Forgive the thread drift.

Best Regards, Les

Of course the topic has appeared many times before. And I'm sure new members still gain some insights. Just like snide remarks about repetitive topics have appeared many times before. Except no one gains insights from those.

If we tried to limit new threads to new and original topics, this forum could have stopped accepting new ones years ago. Every topic, including "What on Earth do I have here?" and "How much is this gun worth?" can be answered through diligent use of the forum search function, if you know what you're doing.

But what would be the fun in that? :)

PLEASE do not take this the wrong way.... I'm just trying to give you a lesson in the internet

I could just report it stolen in the state of NC.... was easy to find your home state....then a year or two later say I saw it online and report it. Not to mention when I googled your screen name, your instagram account has your full name.... other links have your state. then I can google your name and state or pay for a quick data check you can go on from there.

Honestly, you haven't figured out how: devious, desperate, conniving, stupid, ridiculous criminals are yet? Or you are naive that anything on the internet is private and nobody can find you.

By the way, stopsign32v, you need to put a password on your photobucket account. It is wide open, and anyone can see all of your photos, and could delete the whole kit and caboodle in an instant, or steal the whole bunch. I know that the forum fraternity is one of the most honorable outfits on the Internet, but there are trolls on every site, and some of them are malicious. Come to think of it, this is the only place where I have not detected any trolls. I think the mods do a great job in that regard.

Keep safe!!

OK then, what is the consensus of the more savvy folks on the forum? Those that do a lot of buying selling on auctions and such.

Is it worth it or not to blank out part of the serial number or not??
Aside from the "serious" collectors that Lee mentioned where a digit or letter make a difference.

Google Earth blocks the license plates of cars ;)
I have bought and sold a number of guns - both long guns and handguns - and have never blocked out a single s/n. I think that those who do are delusional.

Say it ain't so...

Everyone knows Internet discussion forums are limited to original thoughts.

OH NO.... someone posted the same question TWO years ago.

From now on... holster shot only!

Geeeesh.... Lee's calling the cops about the grips and barrel, and now you're claiming the holster. Good thing the 642 has an internal hammer hidden from view.

Wait a minute... uh oh... I think I hear sirens approaching.

Mine is missing with the Holster!! I can prove it as I worked my magic on the trigger and the spring is a matching serial number;)

The sirens were just from the fire trucks coming to put out the flames soaring from my home. Whew... what a relief. For a minute there I thought Lee and Rule had put the cops on me! :D
