Why do people stick something in the trigger guard?

Why is it that when some people are photographing their pistols, they stick a pen or shotgun shell or something in the trigger guard? Is it to reduce glare or something?

About a 30 degree angle provided by the prop makes a front on pic look better than standing over the gun and taking the same pic. Easier to light too.

A better way is to use a small block (square of clear plastic (Plexiglas) on the back of the gun and then it's not visible in the picture.

Of course if you're not OCD;) you can just use a big cartridge like a .45-70 and not care if it shows.

Agree with the angle for a better presentation. Had a really hard job finding the old blue SW gun props so ordered a bunch of clear acrylic rods - had to buy bulk so posted the surplus under ACCESSORIES/MISC - FOR SALE OR TRADE. They work quite well as shown in this photo of my 617.

I'll see your 45-70 and raise you a 50BMG. As long as it isn't flat, a lot of things work, modeling clay, boxes. etc. IMO it makes for a nicer pic.

The worst I've seen is a masscara tube, LOL. Seems that those that use the devices fail to remember the rules for firearm safety.

Cheers,

Off topic alert!!!! I've seen several bobbed hammer revolvers with the remainder checkered, or done as yours. Assuming you're right handed, can you cock it normally with your right thumb? Do you have to use a two handed grip instead, and pull the trigger slightly to grasp the partially cocked hammer with your left thumb? I had a model 60 done that way and could never master either method. Nice gun, nicely done.

Thanks, Jim

If your a member of a gun forum, you take pictures of handguns and hold 'em up with a boolit... you might be a redneck.

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Jim - I can't thumb cock it unless I pull the trigger a bit to get the hammer back far enough for me to get a good purchase with my thumb. It doesn't take two hands though, I can do it with just my shooting hand.

Also, my .45-70 doesn't seem quite so.... substantial anymore. Must be a case of prop cartridge envy.;) I think I'm going to have to find a .50BMG round to use so I can keep up with the rest of you.
