It just occurred to me that Smith & Wesson doesn't make a shotgun. I understand that they are a law enforcement/military and self defense centered firearms company. But why not make a tactical home defense shotgun? They certainly have the technology to do so and Thompson already builds 12 ga Turkey and slug guns.

What is everyone's thoughts on this? Do you think Smith & Wesson would benefit by brining a tactical/home defense shotgun to market for both law enforcement and civilian use? Would you purchase one from them?

They've tried it at least twice before in the past without commercial success.

It's hard to break into a market already dominated by Remington, Mossberg, and cheapo's from Turkey.

They have to stay in the market for more than 15 minutes for folks to have confidence that they will be there for repairs and service donw the road. They have not had the fortitude to stay in anything but the handgun market, except for AR's. Let's hope they don't abandon that market either.

I don't think they are going to abandon the AR market. They seem to be pretty committed to it and have a wide selection for the consumer. It also seems like they have been making updates to their M&P 15 line.

I think, if done right and marketed right, they can break into tactical/defense shotgun. It seems before the other shoties were for hunting. That is a difficult market to break into with the manufacturers that you mentioned. But if they strictly brand the shotgun line as LEO/military police "black" gun, I think it could catch on. The market is out there and the accessory market is out there too.

Just my random thought for the day.

Hello Giannig83, Like others have said S&W did make shotguns as I have their model 916a which I had the factory overhaul. They replaced the barrel & cracked stock. I'm happy with it & it looks good. It's a combat shotgun in 12 ga.
