why the shortage of holsters?

Given the popularity of the M&P line of handguns I am shocked that so few holsters are available for this gun. I recently picked up a M&P 45C and it took me the better part of a day at different shops to find a carry holster. I ended up with a desantis 3 slot pancake holster. Some companies don't even have holsters in their selection list for these guns. This gun has definitely been around long enough that it should have everybody in line as far as hoslters.

I believe some glock 20, 21, 37, and Sigma Series holster will fit the M&P just as well. At least some holsters (Blackhawk) advertise that their holster fits all these models.

I know M&P makes a pretty big deal about 9/40 versus 45 holsters but I'm not so sure there is that much difference.

If you go to Smith's website, you will find most of the leather holsters are all made by DeSantis. Some of these M&P's were sold with Blade-Tech M&P Series holsters that have the S&W Military & Police logo along with a double mag pouch. You can also pick-up this Blade-Tech holster on their website www.blade-tech.com

Mine rides in a Glock 20 Holster, and a friend of mine uses an HK USP for his...might work for you as well. I also use a number of Kramer Holsters..usually his #3 IWB and his selection includes M&P.

I have both a M&P9 and an M&P9C.

I have an ITAC polymer paddle holster which works for both (ITAC-MP1).
I have Don Hume leather paddle holsters for both (H720 OT PDL-P #99-MP and H720 OT PDL-P 99-MPC). The H720 OT #99-MP would work for both.

The blackhawk fits 9-40-45 of course the compacts end up with more length than needed.

Almost all the makers build holsters for the 9,40 but not the 45. Galco doesn't build an IWB for a 45M&P.Don Hume is very limited on M&P 45s.

I searched a long time to find 45 holsters for the M&P. Finally got an IWB from Blade-Tech.

Vinnie, you are definitely right. When I first got my M&P40 and M&P40c, finding holsters was a pain. It didn't have squat to do with local dealers. I was strictly shopping online. Try finding a duty holster and drop leg holster for an M&P with a light in 2007. It was a nightmare. Safariland made them but could not deliver one for several months. I tried every online source I could find. Each one who purported to have these holsters in stock was lying. I was later told by a Safariland rep that holsters were being manufactured but they were mostly going to the northeast.

As far as concealed carry holsters, Galco (my favorite production holster maker) failed. I would have liked a Silhouette or an Avenger. They made one for the ever-popular AMT Hardballer and Star PD but not the M&P. I ended up with a decent Desantis, also.

The situation is better now, but too little-too late.

I was looking at the Crossbreed Supertuck for my m&p9c. Any opinions about this holster for my m&p9c?

I agree... it is a little difficult to find a good affordable holster for the M&P.
This has changed and yet I stay with the CROSSBREED Supertuck.
SuperTuck Deluxe

I got one for my FS M&P 9 PRO... and I just heated it up and flanged the bottom out a bit to accomopdate the front site that was catching.
WORKS PERFECT... and very comfortable... have it on right now while browsing the internet...
no need to take it off... can barely tell it is there.

And for those that dont need to conceal...
I use a Safariland 6377 ALS Holster for my M&P 9MM Pro, and it is a 10/10 IMO.
Safariland 6377 ALS Belt Holster FREE S&H Safariland Model 6377, Safariland Holsters.

hope that helps...

Thanks. I've been reading some good things about the Supertuck and viewing some videos online. Looks like I'll probably go that route for CC. Not sure about open carry holster, yet.

I can make any of my holsters for the M&P line. I know because I love carrying my M&P40 full size and compact.

I have a Galco Concealable lack leather holster for my M&P 9c, However, I also use it for my M&P 9 and my M&P 45 Mid-Size. The full-size 9 sticks out the bottom about 1/2", and the 45 sticks out the bottom about 1/4".

One of my favorite holsters is the Safariland 5181 paddle. I was surprised to find they do not make it specifically to fit the M&Pc. Their size fit chart says to use the one for a HK USPc, which is quite a bit larger gun than the M&Pc.

I use Comp-Tac for my M&P 9mm and 45. They are Kydex. They make IWB and paddle holsters, all custom made for the individual model of M&P. (Other makes also.) Mine are belt holsters used for Production USPSA.

Ditto on the Comp-Tac. For OWB, Blackhawk makes one for the 9 and 40, but the 45 uses the same as Glock 21

The facts are, if it's not a Glock or a 1911, holsters will always be a little more difficult to get. Sure, some holsters fit other guns than what they are designed for, but that's a little ghetto :D

The Crossbreed Supertuck is extremely comfortable and holds the pistol tight to my body, concealing nicely under a light summer shirt. I've only "Tucked" it a couple of times and don't believe tucking works well for me with this or my Milt Sparks VM2.

BladeTech makes an excellent belt holster that's great for training as well as carry.

I have that problem with my S&W CS45. Have to find holsters for other pistols that just happen to fit.

I currently use a Fobus made for the Ruger P94. Fits fine - just had to dremal cut a couple inch's off bottom to fit my length.
