To show you how brazen it is becoming in the wild.

We have lived in the country for many years. We have a live creek that runs thru our property. We have watched the traffic on the road go from 1 tractor and 1 pickup a day to 1 tractor (mine), 1 pickup (mine) and a 100 small throwaway cars.

Several years ago I was outside and heard my wife screaming. I arrived at her location and observed our Rhodesian Ridgeback hound, Anna (the Ridgeback) had just saved my wife from a mauling and was in the process of finishing off the bobcat. My wife had heard Anna barking at something in the shrubs and went outside to check. When she got there she couldn't see what it was but grabbed Anna by the collar and was pulling her away from the house. Out of the corner of her eye she saw a tan blur coming at her and leaped with all four feet (claws extended)..She let go of Anna when the bobcat hit her and then Anna took over. Within seconds Anna had killed the bobcat. My wife skin around her thighs was saved by a new pair of levis and Anna.

The Sheriff's Department wouldn't come out since it was a weekend so I took the bobcat to a vet. friend of mine.
They did an autopsy and sent the head to Austin Tx. to check for rabies. The test results were negative. The vet. said the
cause of death were very large teeth punctures in the neck, and chest area.

Anna was sure a good dog !

We have had Rhodesian Ridgebacks around the place for 35 years. They are bred to hung lions in Africa. I guess this 35lb bobcat was just desert.

Good dog indeed. Glad everything worked out and rabies was negative.
Not familiar with ridgebacks other than I had a friend that years ago raised them. His weren't real big dogs, maybe 50-60 lbs., best I recall.
I remember him saying they were bred to hunt lions in the old country, so a bobby should be a piece of cake.

What a good story, very happy to hear the missus wasn't seriously injured. Hope she healed up quick.
Did Anna suffer any scratches at all?

Thanks sharing the tale, I will share with my wife, as I have been trying to get her to carry, anytime she goes for a walk in the woods, with little success. May I ask if your wife had protection other than the dog when she was out and about?

She carries a S&W scandium .357. 4inch with HIVIZ sights in her purse. Shooting it is like shaking hands with KING KONG. She was unarmed when the bobcat attacked.

Anna had some small scratches around her face but nothing major. She healed up quick. She lived to be 15 years old and her ashes are in a engraved box on the fireplace mantle,

This place is lousy with coyote. The yodel dogs are out on the street after 10-11 at night. If you shoot one it has to be a case of self defense.
Another vote for silencers....

You must be talking about in the city limits. When I was on patrol we would see them downtown going thru garbage cans.
It was usually a fight between coyotes and raccoons.

Anna is happy your wife is happy and you are happy....Anna is especially happy her instincts kicked in, made her happy..Years ago I had a orang Airedale..90 lbs of courage...Loved kids and was protective as she could be.....
she got into it with a wild hog that we surprised on a walk..the hog was guarding her young ...The fight was on....The hog finally retreated after the Airedale got her by the throat .....The hogs that we didn't know were making their nest in a old creek bed, moved somewhat worse for wear, that Airedale pranced around for a week as much to say see I'm still the boss on this land. Like most Airedale's she died at 13, the male died at 14...I still miss those great dogs....."They guarded their pauper master as if I was a prince" Not my words..exert from a court case in 1869 ..."The old Drum Case" Airedales seemed bread with courage....I loved that dog!!!

My misses walks my dog everyday. She sees deer most of the time. We hear the packs of yotes running at night every so often. We have bobcat, lynx, mountainlion and bears. We're in a suburb country type setting with horse farms and small farmers.
My point is the misses took the ccw course and all she has left is the finger printing. I have no clue why she's waiting. One night at dusk she confronted a coyote already while walking the dog.
I need a second dog too. I'll look into that ridgeback.
No one is trapping anymore the predators are out of control.
They say it's so bad we lost most of this springs fawns do to the predators.
That's going to leave a generation gap.

I had a 145lb rottie and a crazy black lab. No one, nothing could go near the misses when she was walking them. My new yellow lab pup is four years old now and that's her dog too. She trained him from a pup. He would do anything to protect her. He listens to me but it's her dog. She walks him.

When my rottie was a live the house would shake when she barked. When she was outside the FedEx man would back in the driveway and push the packages out the door. He wouldn't get out of the truck. She would lay in the flower bed. She looked like a bear.

Having a dog or two could save your life this post proves it.
I hope you cooked up a tee bone steak for your dog.

About 2 lbs of cooked hamburger that was raised on the place.

You need to look at Ridgebacks. They are the only dog I know that will stay beside you all day long when you are a horseback.

On of the Clint Eastwood movies had one that trailed along with him. I think it was Josey Wales.

They are great family dogs, when raised with a family. They are of the hound breed and sleep a lot during the day when inside. They don't shed. Don't get a male, He just wants to lay around and eat and sleep. Get a female and have her neutered. They pretty well ignore other dogs and are above them in attitude.
But you will just have to see with an existing family pet. Word of caution: When they get mad the ridge stands up on their back and they are mad thru and thru. Hard to pull them off something that attacks them. Pretty aloof and always on guards especially around a family.

I was in a pickup with a young puppy (35lb) beside me. I pulled up to another ranch and a large German Shepherd came running towards my pickup and acting vicious. I had the window down the pup jumped thru the window between me and steering wheel and stopped the Shepherd dead in it's tracks. No fight but just in his face. Very protective !

They will attach to one person in a family but will be friendly to all INHOUSE family members. THEY WILL NOT FETCH. They will for the first couple of times and then it is your turn to go get it back.
