Wild Cat Taken with My Modified 16-4 .327 Magnum Revolver

Good shooting. My neighbor had a big bobcat coming into his stand this week--but it "just disappeared". Made the hair stand up on the back of his neck. This was on my Uncles place where they trapped 20 bobcats in two seasons.
I have't shot my .327 enough to carry it while hunting. Nice that you have shown its potential.

Hello Tim
I have had a Few Knowledgeable Guys look at these Pictures and all want to say this cat is a cross breed of more than Likely Part wild Cougar. I am not really sure but he sure was Big, Mean and One Pretty Scary Looking Cat looking straight down on me in Stalking mode. That visual of him in my mind will go to the Grave with me....:)Hammerdown

I hear you Kurt.;)

Having a predator looking at you with the "stare" can be unnerving. Especially when there aint much air between you.

Hey Tim
35 Yards is Two quick leaps out of an animal like this. I wan't really thinking about when I took it, but after seeing it's Claws which were curled about 1-1/2" Long and to a Pin Point, it really provides a reality wake up call... MEOWWWW...

Hello Cobroller
I am Hoping that by Taking an animal of this Magnuitude with this Caliber, that it may Wake up the revolver Making companies Mainly S&W. They need to Re-Introduce the Model 16-5 in .327 Magnum as I feel it would sell far better than that Lousy Looking-J-Frame Performance Center wonder they are currently marketing. This would give us Hunters a revolver we Really Want !!! ;) Hammerdown

Good shootin' Kurt!!! That is one BIG kitty. It probably was harassing the local deer population. You should get a nice full body mount. Bob

Hello Bob
I figured that is why perhaps there were no Deer in that area. last year it was covered up with them, but a Cat like this would keep them away. I Plan on having it made into a Full Body Mount, and want to add a Fox squirrel to it in it's Mouth or under a paw of it. I will have to Hunt Clinch Mountian to get that type of squirrel as they are about two to three times the size of a Northern Gray squirrel. My Son in law said he was glad he was along to see all of it, as Others may not believe that I took it in the wild with a handgun. I told him it does not matter what others thought as those that Really Knew me or have shot with me at the Range would more than Know this was no Fable...I worked the Range Thursday afternoon and the Younger Range safety officer I had Trained was working with me, and he commented that I was Plum wearing out the Target with my 16-4. I explained to him that I had a Wild Cat I was after, and Needed all the practice I could get and he Kind of Blew it off. He has been to my house and seen it now, and knows fully why I had shot my revolver that many times going after something like this in the woods... Hammerdown

That is a very nice cat, and congrats on a excellent shot!

Also I just read on wikipedia the largest bobcat on record weighed 48.9 pounds. maybe you have a new world record there.

Great shot and testament to the .327 mag.

Thank you for this post. I very much enjoyed the story. I have been thinking about the .327 as a good small game/self-defense round. In a nice K-Frame revolver with a good 5" barrel, it would be ideal for field/hunting and would serve if needed for self-protection. Hopefully S&W will consider reintroducing this caliber in the K-Frame as I think it would be much more useful that a single-action type revolver. Sincerely. brucev.

Hello Bruce
My Pleasure. It would be a very easy Gun to Re-Introduce. They all ready have a 686 in an -L-Frame so just a barrel in .32 Cal and a Cylinder chambered in .327 Magnum would fit the bill...;) Hammerdown

Kurt, I have a couple of 16-4's that I was thinking about converting to327 by Bowen. You have made my mind up to do it. Which one do you all think would be better, a 4 inch or 6 inch barrel?

Hello Peyton
Back when I was Hunting for a Model 16-4, I wanted a 4" Badly. I took the 6" Model as a 4" did not seem to exist. Looking at this from a Velocity stand Point, the 6" win's. I would say as Hot as this Cartridge is, I Prefer the 6" for a Little more recoil control and a Little less report. It surprised me as to how Loud it was and when you stoke these they are very similar in recoil to a .357 Magnum....Regards, Hammerdown

very cool...its a very differant hunt when using a handgun..i have recently taken a boar as well as a 4-horn ram with my 500 mag.
good shooting!

Weigh In Time

Hello Guys & Gals
Thanks again for the Kind words. The actual weight of this cat has come up on another Gun Board. I had an Arm Chair Hunting Expert tell me that there was no way this Cat weighed 50 Pounds. :confused:This forced me to drag him out of deep freeze for a close up and personal weigh in. I feel the Internals of this Cat before it was dressed would have easily made up the Lacking Ten Pounds from the weight actual shown. Funny, The Guy did not respond after I Posted the Picture below...:D

50 pounds is right around the bobcat record, I would contact your DNR maybe they are interested in taking a look see.

That is one big hunk of *****(cat). I have hunted bobcats, even owned one back in the 70s when it was legal. He was a big cat (at 35#) and the meanest critter I have ever tried to domesticate, still got the scars. Yours is a really close record. I do not believe it is a cross breed, I think the hair tufts are right where they should be, of course I am not an expert. I think it was just a well fed cat.
I really like big cats, wolves and bears. And any time I can spend watching them is time well spent. I haven't hunted them for a while as I have near records in all of them, including AK Brownie.
This does not mean I would not have taken a 50 pounder though! And I will dispatch any who are preying on my local deer population, I have got my grandkids addicted to venision, cheaper tham happy meals at Micky Ds.
Congratulations on a great wheelgun shot, if you would, I would appreciate more info on your conversion. cause I have a M16 4" with 32 mag and an extra 32-20 cylinder that is just a smidgen short chambered for .327 mag.
