My dog and I were walking on our usual trail when a wild turkey flew away about ten feet to our left. It sounded like a B52 taking off! Here's why she was there:

Guess we'll have to alter our route for a while.

The mountain laurel are especially nice this year:

A tame hen will nest the same way if she's not penned up. We had one that would disapear every spring for a few weeks and then come home with a bunch of little black dots running behind her.

I was on an Land navigation class at FT Leonard Wood MO and stirred up a flock of turkey. They surprised me so much I almost pee'd myself!! You are right about the amount of noise they make taking off. Oh, I completed the course and managed to stay out of the poison oak also.

Kudus to you for altering your walk route. 'She' will appreciate it.

I have 3 nesting in one of the grass hay fields.

I bought a new fishing rig one time and went across a field behind my house on a dirt bike, to a small pond just over the fence. When I got off of the bike and grabbed my gear I walked to the grown up fence row and a wild turkey, a white one, flew up and about gave me a heart attack. there were 13 eggs in the nest if i remember correctly. I had seen a white turkey in amongst flocks of wild turkeys around here for some time. An old man who lived not far from here told me that he had a bunch of tame white turkeys when he moved here back in the 40's. He said the wild turkeys would come up to eat with them and that several of his left with the wild ones. I saw a turkey in my yard and on my lane a couple of times that has quite a bit of white beneath it's wings. Kinda odd looking.
Later when i checked that nest, the eggs were gone and there were white feathers all over the place. Fox I suppose.
Peace,
gordon
