My son just picked up a 27, #N167XXX, and when he pulled the grips, this is what he found..... They are NOT Target grips, but just the grips the fit on each side of the frame, with the a serial number showing. Would that vintage 27 be shipped with Target grips. Looking for some info and help... THANKS....FlyingliverIMG_4567.png

Model 27s could have shipped with either magna style grips, which is what you describe, or optional target grips. The serial number on yours are later than the gun, so they are likely replacements. Perhaps at sometimes in its life it had rubber grips on and somebody chose to replace him with a set of magna grips. At that point the original grips were likely long gone. If the grips fit correctly, they are most likely N frame grips.

Thanks for the info... I figured that the N frame was larger in the grip area. The gun shop had two 27's that came in from the same consigner and he'll check the serial on the other one tomorrow. They may have been inadvertently switched.

You are describing Magna grips. Those were the standard grips for the M27 until 1974 or so, Targets were optional. Unlike the M29 where the Target were standard grips due to the 44 magnum and the need to hold onto more wood.

Your son's gun was made in 1973, so it could have come with Magna grips. Post a pic of the current grips and we will tell you if they are period correct. The ones above are not original to the gun but could be exactly the same as what it came with.

Yes.
K Frame magna and target grips will 'fit' on an N Frame revolver. The distance from the circular cut out at the top of grip to the locator pin is the same so the grips will be secure and not shift around. There will be quite a bit of exposed frame at the top of the back strap however.
If you have an N Frame that needs some grips and you don't have anything else, a set of K Frame grips will make the gun at least serviceable until you can find a proper set of N Frame grips.

Yes. But not well. I’ve bought at least two N frames that had K frame target grips on them. Simple switch-a-roo.
This. I picked up a 28-2 that had a nice pair of rosewood targets on it. Poor thing looked miserable in her too small outfit. Took her home and threw on some of bigmtnman's elk stags on it. Sent the K frame targets to Curt Harlow for a refresh. Now they are very nice and reside on my 18.
