I've been wanting to have the slide on my sd9ve cerakoted black and hope to have it done soon since the sd9 is not on the roster here in Commiefornia. Will that void the warranty? The gun is stock.

Two versions of the SD9VE are on the CA (For sale) Roster, I think expiring in 2019.

My opinion, FWIW, is that cerakoting the slide would void only the portion of the warranty that covers the finish on the slide, e.g., rust or corrosion that might happen after you get it done.

Why wouldn't the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act apply, just like it does to cars? If the consumer changes or alters part of the device (car, gun) the warranty is voided as far as it covers that part of the device and things affected by it; but other parts of the device that are not affected by the modification are still covered under the original warranty.

When we tinker with Apex trigger kits, as an example, we pretty much give up any expectation that S&W will fix, under warranty, anything related to the firing train. That's one of the reasons forum members recommend taking out modified parts if you send a gun back to the factory, just to make it simple, and because the factory might want to replace the aftermarket parts with factory parts if they believe the former have anything to do with the problem the gun is having.

I have a SD9, with the black slide, and while the bright silver-covered slide is cool, I too prefer the black slide!

I like the approach Ruger takes. They intentionally do not have a warranty at all. That way they avoid all the legal stuff. But they also back their products forever. Pretty much with no questions asked. You DO need to take out aftermarket parts, or they WILL replace them all with Ruger parts. But they fix or replace your gun. I don’t know what they would do about a painted slide. Who knows, they might replace it with a new one.

Ask Ruger about parts for a Security Six - you'll find out that they don't service the pistols forever.

As to the slide, if it had to be detail stripped it might technically void the warranty, as they don't consider that to be in the realm of the end user. I've had both sorts of CS folks answer the phone at S&W - take care of everything no questions, and fill all the blank spaces on that form before proceeding.

Your best bet is to keep an eye on gunbroker or ebay for a spare slide. Gunbusters frequently list SD9VE parts kits that include everything but the frame and magazine.

Unfortunately "forever" is is not the case with Ruger. They support products that are currently in production. There is an ever growing list of models they no longer service. The Security/Speed/Service Sixes, the Mini-14 180 Series, the P-85/P-89 autos, the 10/22 Magnum,. the Tang Safety M77's are just a few of the guns they no longer service.

Manufacturers are simply unwilling to stock parts for guns that they already made their profit on and have been replaced in production by other models. It eats into their bottom line and makes stockholders unhappy.

If you need a gun that you'll always be able to find parts for get a 1911 or an AR-15.
