I may be revealing my age but IMO she not only can sing, she is also most definitely HOT.
Not only did she nail the high note most singers have trouble with, she popped it up another octave...

Agreed. She's 54, I believe. Young enough to be my daughter.
Like Placido Domingo before he went almost entirely to conducting, she's an opera singer who can sing beautifully and act.

That National Anthem was definitely the high point of the worst Super Bowl ever
A beauiful and pleasingly dramatic rendition. It put chills up and down my spine. Can't remember the last time I enjoyed it more.
There are interpretations and there are interpretations. She has a nice voice, and sounded good, but took some liberties with the phrasing that I could have done without. At least she didn't say "per-o-liss".

She did great!!!! No be bob .no changing the song and she didn't forget the words....How novel is that??? As it turned out the Anthem and Bruno Mars were the highlights of the game . The first play sort of set the stage......Goes to show you ,"On Any Sunday" isn't just a cute saying.

As an opera buff, never could understand Fleming's appeal. Her voice is ravishing but it's nowhere as dramatic or impactful as the greatest of all -- Maria Callas. The anthem is hard to sing and her attempt to hit high C's ruined it. Toscanini, who was a purist and dedicated to eliciting the notes as the composer wrote them, would have been horrified at Fleming's performance.
She was good, but Whitney Houston hasn't been topped yet.

I thought she did just fine, it was refreshing to hear someone sing it without trying to go jickey with it. Two songs when done even halfway right bring on the cold chills and a tear or two, our National Anthem and Amazing Grace never fail.

I had no idea who she was, or that she had any connection to opera, but as she sang I was reminded of the scene in Shawshank Redemption when everyone in the prison stopped to listen when "Andy" barred the door and played opera over the loudspeaker.
I'm sure there were a few watching around the world who have no idea what the Anthem is about but were moved by last night's delivery nonetheless.

Callas had MONGO voice and dramatics but she hasn't been around for decades. For that matter neither has Toscanini. A person doesn't have to sing loud to sing beautifully. In concerts Tito Schipa put a blanket over the piano so it wouldn't drown him out.
I agree that the high note at the end of the anthem didn't come off very well.
And on another subject:And as for 'It's not over til the fat lady sings' saying take a look at Anja Harteros, Patrizia Ciofi, Irana Garanca, Waltraud Meier, Joyce Di'Donato, Kate Aldrich. I'd put these ladies with my pinups any time.

Well, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa probably never sang The Star-Spangled Banner!
I think she could probably eclipse Renee Fleming, but the famed New Zealand soprano is retired now, I believe.
You can find some of her memorable performances on YouTube. She was so well known as an opera singer that she was invited to sing at the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Her singing fared a lot better than that marriage did.
She holds the female equivalent of a knighthood. Is a Maori or part Maori; I forget which. But could she sing! I especially liked her performance in a recording of the Royal Philharmonic in Handel's, The Messiah.
Some of you may have seen her in ads for Rolex watches.
