Sorry to have another Colt question on the S&W forum, but you guys are the best. I have two S&W revolvers, but ended up with this old Colt Combat Commander. You guys gave me some good advice on some gunsmithing, and now I have a question on magazine fit-up. My gun is still at the smith's shop, but he also recommended I start using Wilson Combat magazines. I ordered two of them from Midway and they are already here. Model 47DC, sized for the commander, but since my gun is at the shop I can't try them in it. I'm looking at the base pads, and even though they are called the slim base pad, it appears there is a section of the black base pad material going up the front edge of the magazine tube, and while I recall the Colt magazine having a little thin metal flat strip that stuck out right there, this looks thicker. Do you guys think this will actually fit in the notch at the bottom/front of the frame? Or will the Wilson Combat magazine stick out too far with the stainless steel tube of the mag showing? Sorry, it's hard to explain, I just don't know if the mag will go up into the mag well far enough because of the base pad projection on the front side. Any experience with this?

Thanks guys! B

I use them in Kimber's, S&W's and Wilson's. 7's 8's 8 round conversions for 7 round guns, and 10 round. They all interchange. My are all the old style, not the ETM's. Spring pressure is light and they always work.

The magazine will fit like a glove, Wilson mags are the best. When you buy a Kimber you usually throw away the junk mags that come with it and buy a few Wilson mags, this is what is commonly known as the Kimber tax.

Thats kinda funny, I have 10 Kimber mags that work flawlessly in my .45.

I also have 4 .38super Kimber mags that work perfectly in my Kimber and my Fusion.

Personally I think Wilson's are rather overpriced and over rated.

I've had pretty fair luck with the OEM Kimber mag's (1 Officers length, 2 Govt. length guns). But I run the Wilson's. The Combat Commander is a Government length frame running a 4 1/4" barrel and slide, instead of a 5". The mag's for both are the same. Show us what you did to her when your get her back!

Experiences and opinions are going to vary a bit when it comes to 1911 magazines ...

Personally, after many years of using a number of different magazines I've come down to remaining with Tripp Research, ACT-MAG (as marketed by both Wolff and S&W) and Metalform (with the heavier springs, typically in the "FBI" configuration).

I've used a lot of other magazines over the years, including Pachmayr, Colt (various vendors), Vega (an oldie), Devel, early Shooting Star, Wilson 47's and some others I can't remember off the top of my head at the moment. Wilson's are relatively lightly sprung.

The magazines I use for serious purpose remain the Tripp, ACT-MAG and Metalform mags which have demonstrated satisfactory functioning in my guns.

Magazines are at the heart of a semiauto pistols proper functioning ...

In my Kimber I use the mag that came with it new, also I use Wilson Combat and Kim ProTac Mag . All mags seem to function very well....

The Wilson mags should work just fine.
The only time I've had a problem is with the metal base plates. One brand of 1911 I use won't allow the Wilson mags to fully seat if there is a metal base plate in them.

In my Kimber 4" Pro Carry and 4" Les Baer I have used the stock Kimber mags with out a problem and just recently switched out the springs with Wolff Extra power springs. I believe that Metalform are the OEM builders for Kimber mags, correct me if i'm wrong. These mags are over 5 years old with lots of rounds through them.Hope this helps!
