Wilson Hammer Spring Question

Hey all, I plan on replacing the hammer spring on my 649 to the 8lb Wilson Spring.

My question is: Do I need to take the side plate off in order to get the spring/strut back in? Or can you just slide it in the way it came out?

You might get lucky and be able to do it with only the grips removed.
