Starting to load for my new AR-15. I just read an article that warned against using Win. WSR primers (newer, brass colored) in the AR platform. That writer seems to believe that these primers are made with a softer metal, and are prone to slam-fires in the AR. Anyone have any experience with these primers? Thanks.

I tend to take most articles with a grain of salt lately.
it would not be the first time some piece of recycled pablum made its way into authoritative venues, both of print, and legislation.

Now I don't know either way for sure, but you are in a position to buy some and try some, then tell us if its fact or bull.

I've only ever heard that about Federal primers, but never experienced it. Never even heard it before regarding Win primers.

What have the manuals printed for oh so many years?? Regular SR primers.

Before the ad executives decided they could sell people tactical stuff and AR 15 41 primers??

Actually it is pretty near non existent to get a slam fire in a semi auto AR 15. Perhaps full auto .

I use Win and CCI SRP.

I have had slam fires with WSR, Rem 6 1/2 and Fed 205. CCI 450 and Rem 7 1/2 have worked perfect for me. Never tried any of the other primers specifically designed for AR's.

I use them all--other than Tula & Wolf being harder to seat --all work for me. A slam fire sounds like a high primer? Winchester is one of my favorites. I do stay away from military brass other than Lake City once fired -resized -swaged & trimmed.

Thanks for the replies. My LGS had some Win. WSR & some Rem. 6 1/2. I picked up a few of each. I'll try 'em out, and I'll let ya know. I kinda figure that if there was a certain primer that was more likely to SF, there would many more comments, all over the web, about it happening. And, if it really was a problem, the manufacturer would (have to) stop selling them.

don't neglect the fact that whenever you have an issue with something universal, like a primer, in a specific piece of equipment, the problem is the piece of equipment.
pins and springs for the win ... if you ever need for a solution.
