Winchester Commemorative ammo...

While doing a little "research" I came across these two Commemorative samples of Winchester 30-30 ammo.

Are there other Commemoratives of other Presidents or actors? I figured there would be a Ronald Reagan and maybe a Gary Cooper for sure, but this particular web site didn't list them.

Well, I saw these when they came out, and bought a box of .45 Colt simply because they were nickel plated cases, and it was only a few bucks more than the regular .45 Colt Winchester factory load. Never occurred to me to look at the headstamp- I just liked it because it was nickel plated.

And that's another thing. Why do ammo companies even make brass casings anymore? Why don't they ALL use nickel? I much prefer nickel over brass. The main reason I'm gonna buy a couple of boxes of the John Wayne stuff is because it's nickel. I just picked up a Winchester model 94AE Centennial model with the oversized "Duke" loop...

And I have one of these on order for it...

We all know what happens when you put brass cartridges in vegetable tanned leather loops. I don't want my leather nor ammo turning green.

There is a disadvantage to nickel plated cases, and it is the fact that they become brittle very quickly when reloaded and don't last as long as plain nickel cases.

Also, nickel cases are more "slick" than their plain cousins- which may or may not be desirable in a caliber, usually this crops up more often in high powered rifle calibers. I will say that most good quality heavy cases in .45 Colt last almost indefinitely with the wimpy cream puff loads most cowboy shooters use unless they split at the neck.

I've had great luck reloading nickel cases, and in hot loads too. I think the secret is to never flare the case mouth more than is need to accept the bullet.

The leather/non-nickel brass thing is one of the reasons I use handloads in my .44 magnum. I'm tired of cheapskate ammo makers charging as much as a buck and a half a shot and not even using nickel cases. What a joke.

I bought a case of Winchester "Legendary Lawmen" commemorative ammo in .30-30 to go along with the "Legendary Lawmen" commemorative model 94. Got it at a good price about 10 years ago and set aside a few boxes but have been shooting the rest. Taken several whitetails with it, good ammo.

I was nearly forced to buy a box of the 44-40 to hunt with a few years ago. Only game in town until the day before the hunt, I happened into a bait shop that had an old box of Remington JSPs.

Anyway.... The John Wayne 44-40s were $70 odd dollars a box!!

Well, I found some at my local shop for $25 a box. They're not John Wayne but they are Teddy Roosevelts. I think I'll go pick 'em up.

If anyone has visited Sagamore Hill (Teddy Roosevelt's home) in Oyster Bay Long Island. it is a quite a site. Beautiful old home with more animal trophies than I can count.

Who were some of the "Legendary" lawmen?

Not really sure. On the box it notes, "The Winchester Legendary Lawman. A limited edition lever action rifle recalling those who struggled for law and order in the early West."

What is the special stamping on the case head? On the John Wayne stuff it's "Duke" and "30-30 WIN" while on the Teddy Roosevelt, it's "Roosevelt" and "30-30 WIN"
