Just had to disable windows update entirely on my wife's laptop so she could get some work done. It is an utter goat rope. I'd already killed Superfetch and Windows Search. When we first met I killed some junk apps that came preloaded that were using 50% of the machine looking for stupid game updates.

At this rate we'll have to go back to mainframes disconnected from the Web to get anything done.

Every time Win 10 does an auto-update, I immediately remove all of their extra, unwanted junk, then reboot. Their most recent update was the worst, as it somehow disabled my wireless mouse (desktop PC) after the first click.

There are some pretty amazing freeware programs out there that competently mitigates the pitfalls of Big Brother Microsoft's overbearing operating systems. ;)

I've used Win 10 at home since it first came out, and at least for home it obeys me and usually behaves after the forced updates. At work, a different story - no control over the makes and models we can buy. Wednesday I take possession of 40 brand new Dell laptops with state-mandated hardware and settings. Luckily these are for my museum, for public use, so I can wipe them and set them up with a clean image. Going to be a lot of work... :(

Haven't made it to Windows 10 yet, but 7 allowed you to turn off the automatic update. Then you can get notified there is an update available, and preview what the update is. Any update for explorer is serious trouble, as is internet explorer.

My update happened in the middle of the night Friday. No problems with it except the image I used as wallpaper disappeared and the screen was black. I just found it in my picture files and reset it as wallpaper and I'm good to go. This was a security update mostly so make sure you do it. A recent vulnerability was found and this included the fix.

Timely.

I just had to kill Windows Update and delete everything from the update download folder to get 1903 to download. I sometimes wonder what people who weren't in systems work like I was prior to retirement do when they have problems.

One big change I discovered was that there is no longer a Windows Defender and it has been changed to Windows Security. Must be a new enhanced feature.

My windows 7 and even my Mac browsers no longer are supported by updates. I had to go to firefox just to use my windows 7 browser now.
I bought an IMAC figuring when my windows 7 crashed I would just go with my IMAC but that plan failed as well.

How’s your BetaMax holding up . . . ?

Running 10, got all the updates.
No problems!

Maybe it's a laptop thing, but certain Win10 activities choke her machine something awful. I've done all the tweaks to make sure it operates at 100% and it still gets dragged down. Next thing is to see if there are some funky background tasks that are also causing grief.

Yes, recommend anytime you try to tune up a Win computer,
Do the 3 finger boogie and see what’s running.
Then go to Start Up Programs and stop some, delay some.
The trash programs will often auto boot, just delete them.

Windows Security is just the new branding for Windows Defender, except with the background monitoring more exposed. Meh - it's what Windows does, we deal with it , or we don't. Not like it's a secret.

7 will not shut down after January. It just doesn't keep getting updates. If you use a good anti-virus, such as Webroot, or Bitdefender, they should still keep you protected. Odds are, Windows Security, or Defender, won't update. I doubt they will quit, but will keep getting less useful.

My experience with Windows versions and the updates over the years is Microsoft does what it wants, no matter what we do. Mostly, the 10 OS is ok, and in some ways, faster than 7 or 8. But things they do to the rest of it during updates is the PITA. Went around work all day finding and fixing that the last update for 10, or even 7, put Windows Media Player up front again, no matter the user's choice, which is almost never WMP.
