Winning with grace?

So which is worse, trash talk between two football palyers or two guys knocking each others teeth out in hockey game?   Huh?

It seems that that's ok because that's during the game. As soon as the game ends they must immediately become Don Joan.

I'm not a fan of rugby with pads....I mean football. I like hockey where there are fights and soccer where the spectators beat the balls of each other

Apparently that's something that has eluded the younger generation, but they'll get it eventually or end up like Terrell Owens, Chad Ochoidiot etc. How's that working for them?
Shows ya how much attention I pay to the peanut gallery. Don't even know who these two are...so it ain't working too well as far as I'm concerned.

I get a laugh out of these guys that are always slapping their chests & strutting around whenever they do ANYTHING! You did your job, that's what you're paid to do, SHUT UP! I've seen a couple interviews where Sherman Is trying to down play his rants. Saying not to judge him by what he does on a football field, but how he lives his life. Excuse me? I'm confused here. Why would anyone care how you live your life? You are supposedly a member of society & expected to behave in a civilized manner. No one is paying big money for tickets to watch you run to the store, change a diaper, or mow a lawn. They are paying money to watch you do your job, & when you behave the way you did when you do that job, you WILL be judged.

I've been involved in shooting sports for well over 30 yrs, smallbore rifle; high power rifle; bullseye handgun...etc, one thing about shooters is they are for the most part are real Sportmen/women, for all the shooting matches I've been to, from a local club match to Camp Perry, I never heard any "trash talk", more often then not, shooters will go out of thier way to help a fellow shooter to finish a match if someone have problem with thier equipments, it could be a gun not working; forgot to bring enough ammo; broken spotting scope...etc, usually there will be a few shooters offering help, as I see it that is true sportmanship.

I never understand this culture of trash talking, insulting your opponents talent or the lack of, real sportmen/women do thier talking on the playing field, and be gracious in winning. I can understand a few few friendly put down remarks, but saddly now I see trash talk even in high school level.

That nails it, Tim.

I am trying to conjure up Nolan Ryan acting like that after a no hitter. Just can't get a mental image of it though.

Not to make excuses but Nolan played from I believe 1966-93? How many Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire and A-Rods were there doping back then, How many Phil Niekros cheating now a days... Times change

Majority of these kids come from ghettos or act as if they do. There's no standards set by these leagues and that's what allows them to act the way they do. Blame the NFL, MLB, NHL and NBA... As someone already mentioned theyre spoiled and it starts at a young age. They have recruiters knocking on their doors at 6 years old, filling their heads with arrogance. It starts at the top......... but these leagues are making billions of dollars off these kids/young men. So I dont foresee change anytime soon.

This threads going to get beat like a dead horse lol....

Gonna make a prediction. I honestly don't think the NFL will be around in 10-12 years. They have/are changing it. Perhaps they'll be playing flag football if they still exist.. Earl Campbell couldn't play in todays NFL. He lowered his head between the tackle position. Made a good name for himself doing it too.

Tight game, clock winding down, two great teams competing for glory and a chance to play for a world championship.

Therein lies one of the problems. They've deluded themselves into thinking that they're going to be "world" champions, further fueling their arrogance.

In reality, how can they be "world" champions if the most of the world doesn't care?

That's all I have to say for now. I need to go and practice sand tennis. After all, I'm the world champion.:)

I learned more yesterday. Anybody watch the ESPN miked player broadcast they did? Does it change anyones opinion? It modified mine, and I've learned more about Sherman since then. One, he is currently enrolled in a Masters program as SC, in communication. This tells me he is looking toward the future, not just thinking he will be playing ball the rest of his life (probably gonna get a job in broadcasting). Second, he does a ton of charity work locally. That speaks well of him (though it is common in the Seahawks organisation for the player to do this, particularly with Childrens Hospital). Third, he went up to Crabtree to congratulate him on a good game, and offered his hand. Crabtree shoved him in the face. Sherman did not get physical but did get pissed off (would you?). Crabree also made some comments that you couldn't quite understand. The interview was moments afterward. How composed would you expect someone to be after these events? Have you ever had your adrenaline pumping so hard that you couldn't make a coherent statement? I have.

Sherman has come on the news and apologized for his actions continually. He has stated that the story shouldn't be about him but should be about the team. All of this speaks well for him.

Oh, and he still has an ego the size of a Greyhound bus!:)

He drinks too much of his own Cool Aid, also needs a shave, haircut, and some humility.

I too caution people about forming strong opinions and judging people without knowing all the information. He is a competitor both on the field and off. He graduated from Stanford and started his masters degree while still an undergraduate. He has done tremendous community work to give back to kids and others. He has broken no laws nor tried to prevent anyoneelse from enjoying their individual liberties. He makes an honest living and is good at very good at what he does.

In a society, due to current media capabilities, where people are so quick to take an isolated moment in time and allow that to form a basis of judgment we should be careful. To me this is no different than the uninformed grabbers relying on these "moments" to rally for new laws, bans and regulations.

Pro football and all contacts sports are not to be compared with competitive shooting or any other non contact sport. As a former college wrestler I can tell you from experience there is a major difference between a mental competition with your opponent than when you add a physical component. Magnify that to the degree required to not just compete but to excel at the NFL level and I can understand the adrenaline rush. Especially mere seconds after you just made the play to put your team into the most watched sporting event ever.

When we give the media that type of access these days I am not surprised by the outcome. While I may not say what he said, it was nothing illegal or obscene, so it was within his rights. You may not condone it, but simply not understanding it is insufficient to condemn it. First Amendment today, the SEcond Amendment tomorrow. Just my two cent warning.

Like posted above, class and sportsmanship we're all but
ushered out of big time sports when the draft dodger
M. Ali came on the scene and was percieved by some as
"the next big thing". Ho hum.......
This Sherman guy would just be another dead gangbanger
on the streets if not for his ability to run and jump.

Tight game, clock winding down, two great teams competing for glory and a chance to play for a world championship. Seconds are left (22), close score, one team comes up with a stop and secures the victory. A hard fought victory over another great team.

When interviewed right after the game, a back for the Seahawks chose to denigrate an opposing player calling him 'sorry' and then proclaimed to the world he was ''the best corner in the game''. When actually, he just knocked the ball away, and his teammate intercepted the ball to end the possession. If he had not intercepted the ball (it was 1st down), the offence gets the ball back with 22 seconds and 3 downs to still possibly win the game.

Whatever happened to congratulating the other team, showing some class, and winning with grace? I was taught to respect the other team, give them credit for being a good team, and that makes your success more impressive. If the guy you just beat is a bum and has no talent, doesn't that say you are just a little bit better than a no-talent bum?

He did congratulate him. Looks to me like Crabtree was the bad sport.
