I hope this isn't too much of a rant, so I'll try to put a question in here...

My beloved 15-22 is New Jerk compliant, or so I thought. So now my dilemma is how to legalize it without having to register it.

As most of you may know, only 1 evil feature is enough to criminalize a semi with a detatchable magazine. Since my "NY compliant" semi has only a 10 rounder, I can squeak by that reg as long as I am sure to never load more than 7 rounds in the mag. I can figure that one out no problem.

The dilemma is that pesky pistol grip - that's the evil feature.

The pistol grip on my AK is removable, so that one was just made legal. It still handles well, so I can live with that. It was a post-ban rifle, so it complies in all other respects.

I tried to remove the pistol grip from my 15-22, and found that it secures some springs for the safety. So, that's a problem. What I need is a "cap" or something to cover the spot where the pistol grip goes.

I wonder if S&W will come up with a "part" to accomplish that task, and thus make my 14-22 NY compliant again??

Any words of wisdom?

Unless there's good reason not to register it, I still think that's your best bet, or just do not register it. Plus, a lot of things can happen in a year, its not a totally lost cause just yet. Also, I believe the two springs are in place to keep the rear body pin from popping out and to keep the safety working. You may be able to run the gun without them if that is your hope. Could probably fashion a "cap" by getting a cheap grip and cutting the grip part off, just leaving a flat bottom on the rifle with the screw to attach it I suppose.

I agree with this. If you are upstate, with lenient police, you may get away with it, but it's not worth the risk in my book. Unless it's a factory modification you may still have the same legal issue.
 
I would suggest that you wait until the state formally publishes the so called "military" features. As I understand it you are permitted one feature before your semi auto is classified as an Assault Weapon. So far the features that I've seen listed are a folding or collapsible butt stock, a handgrip, a flash hider, and a bayonet lug. IIRC the New York compliant 15-22 had a fixed butt stock, so no concerns about that feature. I also don't remember every seeing a bayonet lug on any version of the 15-22, so no concern there. All that is left is a flash hider or handgrip. Personally I would lose the flash hider, they are an absolutely useless feature on a rifle in 22LR, so keep your handgrip and replace that useless flash hider with a threaded protector ring.
 
think thats bad next month they are only gonna allow you to shoot foam bullets made by nerf!--seriously just buy a spare grip and cut it off square below the detent holes,you dont wanna lose your safety

The new law states that anything with any ONE of those things is an assault weapon. So if it has a pistol grip, you need to register it.

Not asking for advice, nor would I follow any that deviated from the law.

If I can't make it compliant, I'll register it.

As I said, more of a rant.

Does it define pistol grip. I'd say if it's on a rifle, it's not a pistol grip. Don't know that anyone has ever register the term pistol grip with a definition. Time to start fighting these "lawmakers" with their own medicine!!!

I'm not sure about yours, but mine has a "rifle grip". :D Glad im not in NY, I wish all of my fellow gun owners the best of luck.
 
id hold off until the dust settles and the law is formally passed and approved.i kind of had a feeling that new york would be one of the first states to jump on the antigun bandwagon since we all know cuomo has aspirations to become the next president.otherwise the link provided in this thread showing the kit for a normal style rifle stock MIGHT make your 15-22 state compliant,only time will tell though.as stated above be very careful with what others are telling you to do,dont get into trouble because of bad internet advice.
 
I just checked and I have a device with (a.) one of them evil pistol-grips, (b.) a sneaky tactical-type light, (c.) an extended storage device for hole-making capability, and (d.) it's colored that evil black!!!! Of course it's also a 3/8ths-inch cordless drill with a bigger battery than standard. But by the ludicrous standards of the hoplophobes it is obviously a weapon of mass destruction in some states like New York. Seems ironic to me that some of the Original States of this nation, states that fought tyranny like this legislation, are leaping to accept the foolishness. By the way, is it true that when the idiots wrote the thing they forgot to put in police/military exemption language so your cops will only have 7 bullets also? Hang in. Brothers; a lot of this idiocy won't pass the courts.
 
A Monster Man grip replaces the pistol grip, but because it has a fin that reaches up to the stock, you can't put your hand completely around it. slightly different angle, and you squeeze it instead of gripping it.
 
Being from NY I'm going to wait till the end of the year to register. Let the dust settle and see what happens. If you modify it enough its not a 15-22 anymore, its a .22 with a retarded stock. If your too worried about registering your gun you still have time to sell it out of state before a ban goes country wide. And then you can by a 10/22. Me I bought the 15-22 and I'm gonna register it cause thats what i'm gonna keep using.

I thought they changed it from 2 evil features to one being allowed. The evil features, as I understand it are the pistol grip and the detachable mag. Do as they do in Cali and get a fixed mag where you use a bullet (tool) to change mags. It is reversible as I understand it.

Don't get your panties in a bunch. and start ruining your rifle. Gov. Looney Tune had his day in the sun. He's all set for his doomed political dreams. These laws won't stick, they're illegal. They'll be repealed at some point

just read where they pushed thru this legislation so fast that the way it is written, even LEO's are not exempt...but they are 'fixing" it now...

just another "do as i say and not as i do..."

I have a flashlight with a pistol grip. Am I going to be in trouble if I lump up a burglar with it?
