I have been loading shotshells for 25 years using the same load and components. I have always used Winchester primers but with the cost increases now I have switched to the Wolf primers to save money. I have loaded several thousand and not had any problems. I always thought that shotshell primers were interchangeable but as I was looking at a loading manual today there are no loads listed for this brand of primer. Does anyone know which primer brand is comparable to the Wolf. I can't find any info anywhere.

I'm not to worried about it, just curious. With the different primers listed in the load manual there is just a grain or 2 of difference in powder listed when changing primers. A grain or so is not nearly as serious in a shotshell as it is in a pistol or rifle load. I'm not loading at anywhere near peak anyway.

Thanks,

Glenn

You shouldn't have any problems with them, I used Cheddite primers for a while instead of Winchester because of cost.
Haven't tried any Wolf's yet.

I would call Hodgsdon. I have talked to them several times and, generally, almost all 209 primers can be used interchangeably now.

Funny, as recently as a couple or three years ago this was a big no-no.

The exceptions are Federal and, most people say, Rios, which are interchangeable with Federals.

Some Hodgsdon guys say Rios can be interchanged with Win, Rem, etc. and others disagree.

Wolf are interchangeable with all the rest.

As far as I know, all the "experts" say just Federal and (some say) Rios can't be used with the loads for the others.

I have some 209 Winchester primers I would like to get rid of (about 800). I also live in the Tampa Bay area. Let me know if you are interested.

I recently bought a 1000 Fiochi SP? primers and was told they were slightly larger than others and would stretch the primer pocket, such that other primers would be loose. Bought them anyway as I have a lot of older hulls that I will only load one more time anyway and they were available. Anyone else ever heard this??

The Fiocchi shotshell primers are abit larger in diameter than US mfg 209's,,perhaps a 2 or 3 .000". I use them all the time and if they do indeed stretch the primer pocket out so the usual Winchesters I've been using for all these years are loose,,I'll never know.

I have read that they do, but if you segregate some of your cases for them alone or use them in 'last load' shells, what difference does it make.

I'm using the Fiocchi primers on a batch of shotshells and when they are spent (cracked crimp folds usually), I toss them. I buy the primers by the 5000.

If I ever get to the point of switching back to Win or Rem primers and I have some of the cases left that had seen Fiocchi primers, I'll either try a few to see how they fit (if there are alot of good cases to be saved),,or dump the few that are suspect and go on.

At the price difference and the availability of the Fiocchi primers, I had to go with them. I would have tried Wolf too, but they didn't stock them. Just trying to keep it as inexpensive as possible, and that's not easiy these days.

If your Fiocchi primers are oversize they are from the ORIGINAL manufacture run. Also possibly marked a "615" not 616. They ARE slightly larger in diameter. The current 616's are no larger than WW's or RP's. Zero issues versus any other primers.

BEST price on WW 209's I can find right now (and GET them) is nearing $180 per 5K pack! We bought the 616's last fall at $98 per 5K.

There IS a difference between the various shotshell primers. Do not simply switch a Fed for a WW or a CCI etc. IT DOES MATTER.
