I was bidding on the 4" Triple Lock on GB and it stayed low for a while, then two dudes got on it and they left me in the dust! It went past my budget and I hope one of you fine Gentlemen got it. So as a consolation prize, I sealed the deal for the re-nickeled Wolf & Klar on GB. All things being equal, I would have been happy with either one. So USPS money order goes in the mail today. Merry Christmas to me. Never thought I'd see one that I could afford. And yeah, I know it isn't pristine, It was a duty gun and it is what it is.

Welcome to the Wolf & Klar club! They are great guns many with Texas law history. Unfortunately, a lot of them simply letter to W&K giving you no idea who got them after that. Congratulations on this one, however the W&K addiction always seems to start with only one gun! Twelves steips don't help, either.

That picture is blurry, but I think it is 224XX. I'll know and post that info when I get it in hand

On second thought, the serial number may be 28488. If so that would be #130 in the Wolf & Klar order. Pretty exciting

My third model has the sickest action of almost any gun I have. It is renickled also. I have tried to fit a hammer trigger to it with no success. So my plan is to remove the nickel from the existing units so it at least looks like it's supposed to. The grips are aftermarket. I Am looking for an original nickel model in good condition.

Yes, 22488 would be earlier than the W & K 3rd model production run. This likely shipped in early 1927.

Congratulations on acquiring your W&K 4" nickel 3rd Model .44 HE! Yours (28488) was likely in the first W&K shipment in early 1927. Mine (29803) was in the second shipment in May 1927. I got a pretty good deal on mine a few years ago, but a previous owner had modified it (removed half moon front sight and added barrel rib and Baughman front sight) and re-nickeled the revolver. It did come with a much later mahogany presentation case and letter from Mr. Jinx, but also was wearing much later magna stocks. Enjoy!

I've been learning about S&W revolvers for the past couple of years. I inherited this .44 Special from a family member a few years back. I've only recently been made aware that it is a W&K. It has been in my family since the fifties, but before that I have no idea where it lived and worked. I do know that it has a local law-enforcement history and has ended the life of at least one bad-guy. Not sure it will show up in the photo, but on the butt, next to the S/N is are what appears to be electro-penciled initials, but I can't make them out. It is apparent that it has been re-nickled with the finish being worn down on the trigger and hammer to expose the copper. Also, I removed the stocks that were on it when I received it. They were some cheap, although old, busted, plastic stocks. I had these stocks on hand. I've since replaced these with some reproduction stocks that mimic the original diamond magnas, although they wouldn't fool anyone (I don't have a photo of it with the new stocks). I'm thinking about getting it lettered, but from what I read here, it would probably only tell me when it shipped and that it went to W&K. BTW, it shoots great!

Well, Lee asked for a 3rd Model Hand Ejector .44 thread, so let's start one.

I'll kick it off with one. Back in my college days, I read Elmer Keith's Sixguns and decided I needed a .44 Special. By chance, a invitation to a local gun club meeting introduced me to a fellow student, who then became a very close friend.

Another friend and I were waiting for the meeting when a feller rolled up in a '66 Chevy II, jumped out, and said, "Hey! I'm .44 Special and I have a Frank E. !" Well, that's what several of us told him over the years was the way that he introduced himself.

Anyway...

Smith nut, I'm not sure what your question is. The gun in your original post appears to be wearing the correct, pre 1930 service grips. The medalions did not arrive until later. Have you checked the inside of the right hand grip panel to see if they number to your gun? Hope you've made it to the range by now. How's it run?

I haven't gotten it in hand yet due to the holidays and bad email addresses! I'm okay with these grips, but I have another pre war HE that needs correct grips.
EDIT: I just dug through my box of grips and found the N frame service stocks i bought off of here last fall. Somehow they climbed in the Colt SAA grip bag. All is well.
