I saw wolf small rifle primers at the Indy 1500 gun show for $19.00 a thousand. Are they any good.I have only used cci but at the price are they worth a try.

I will not purchase any Russian made items until Tsar Putin is out of office and the Russian people have real democracy.

WOLF is made in the same plant as Tula. I have gone through 5000 with out a problem. large & small. They are a little cheaper & do the same thing.

A friend of my used them. They are fine but i think he got better accuracy from another brand. Sorry dont remember which.

Lets not even get into Russian politics please. Im from there and i can tell you this, each country is different and people behave different. There will never be a American style democracy there. Ever! As a group Russians and E
Europeans in general are like children. If they don't have a strict parent they will do whatever they want. Even today with more freedoms then ever the place is going down hill fast. People with money will do anything to keep it including putting a bullet in your grandma and those without money will do the same to get it. First hand account, it costs $6k US to be found not guilty of a hit and run death, and another $200 to the family.

With Putin, everyone is a bit more reserved. Just wait till you get a Westernized president. They will take full advantage of it. The black market in Russia has always been big and thats where you went to buy anything from potatoes to missiles. One of the most popular impressions that came out of the Soviet Union was that stores were always empty and people always hungry. Not exactly true. We had lots of stuff but you could never just buy it. You had to make back room deals. I'll give you X for your Y. Very few items actually left the store through the front door. I cant wait to see how it will be with a president that no one fears.

I know it should not be this way but it is a different way of thinking and a different way of life. Putin isnt the greatest, end all, be all president but someone strong willed is needed to run the place. As a group Slavs are nothing more the barbarians that somehow made it into the 21st century. They can buy fancy cars and fur coats but those are just modern luxuries to hide what they really are. Trust me, if it wasnt for someone strict that whole part of the world would be lawless.

Sorry, end rant!

That's a real interesting perspective.. thanks for sharing.

They work just fine.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, there are many, many threads. Google will bring up a gazillon more.

Last year, I gave away about 8000 Wolf small pistol primers. Almost half of the 2000 rounds I loaded in 38 special would not fire. I checked to be sure they were seated properly. The firing pin strike was heavy since I have installed Brownells extended firing pins in my IDPA revolvers. I would have at least 2 or 3 rounds in every cylinder not fire during matches. I took those rounds home and tried them in my other S&W revolvers, my Ruger Blackhawk, GP100, and even my 92 rifle. They simply would not fire. After giving the primers away, I went back to more expensive Winchester, Federal, and Remington primers in my 38 loads. No more failure to fire since then.

I may not be the shapest knife in the draw so to speak, but I have always believed if nothing else that the Russians know how to make ammo that goes bang. They beat the Nazi's in WW 2 plus they have been supplying arms and ammo to the 3rd world for more than 50 years.

Wolf primers are like any primers. Generally they go bang but on rare occasion, they don't. I have a friend that bought a brick and about 100 were bad. I have used maybe 5K over the last several years with out a problem.

Pays your money and takes your chances.

For me the issue comes down to the fact that, whenever possible, I buy American first. Even if the cost is greater, as long as the quality is there, I want to support my neighbors.

No experience with rifle primers from Wolf. I've used their LP and SP and the LP have worked fine but require more effort to seat. I have had the occasional bad primer in the run of SP that I bought, although that isn't an issue if restricted to range use. I would hesitate to depend on them for hunting or SD loads, though.

My Tula (same thing) primers have served me well for my AR. Granted I've only shot a couple hundred, but they have me happy. The only thing I'm not thrilled about is the copper color. I like the silver primers best, don't mind the Winchester brass colored ones and find myself tolerating the copper colored Tula primers.

I have heard nothing bad about Wolf or Tula primers, I just won't buy them. I use CCI and Winchester only!

Wolf Primers

I have been using them since man made shortage. Loaded thousands everyone went bang.

I observed first hand a AR slam fire 2 & 3 at a time, loads using the standard Wolf SR primer. The guy had other loads with normal US primers (forget if he said what) that didn't slam fire so it wasn't the gun. I recall reading something shortly after that about Wolf recommended not using the standard SR primer for AR loads for that very reason, but to use their SR magnum version.

I have read numerous dud reports over the last couple years, I don't think I'll use them unless our supply dries up.

I've used approx 5000 when we had a shortage a couple of years ago. I had more duds and the LPs were more difficult to seat but they were available and my usual CCIs weren't.
No real complaints for range ammo.

Admittedly I shy away from Federal because of the ridiculous overpacking, but no love for Remington?

Please explain about the Federal overpacking. I have used quite a few and don't understand what you are talking about. Thanks.

The primers themselves work okay. If they're on sale I use them but the packaging is about 4x the amount that's necessary. It's wasteful, IMO.

125JHP,
Wolf has Standard SR primers (NCSR), Magnum SR primers (NCSRM) and the have a 223 SR primer (NC223) specifically designed for semi-auto use like the CCI #41 are.

Even though I'm not a fan of Wolf or Tula primers you can't blame Wolf if someone use the wrong primers in .223 ammo and they produced a slam-fire.

Yeah, I can fit 3000 to 4000 CCI primers in the same space 1000 Federal primers takes up. I think you can fit 5000 Remington primers in the same space because the Remington primer boxes are so small.

It's not that I don't like Remington primers, it's just they usually cost more where I live than CCI and Winchester, sometimes by a lot. I have used Remington 7 1/2 primers for my AR ammo when I can't find any CCI primers and they work just fine.

l I have used over 5000 small pistol without a single failure to go bang, probably over 50% were in 38spec/357M. I have used about 3,000 small rifle without a single misfire and my rifle loads have all been accurate. Pistol loads with Wolf primers gave same accuracy as with Winchester small rifle primers. I just ordered $10,000 more sp and 5,000 sr. There is no reason that American made primers should cost twice what the Wolf do, except the Win Fed/CCI, Rem etc want to jack up their profits. I will buy the cheapest primer that works well.

The Wolf primers work well, if you are going to use them in a .223, then get the .223 primers, the regular SR Wolf Primers are too soft for the .223 let alone autoloaders.

The slavs are a real wild bunch, and unlike the Arabs who are also a wild bunch, the slavs are actually capable of producing things. Putin might be what they need and even though the west complains about him, I think the Russian people are probably enjoying the best of times in their existance.

Those profits need to be "jacked up" in order to pay your salary and benefits and to comply with OSHA and EPA regulations. Not to mention and NEC, NFPA and Local code. Oh and there are business taxes, too.

Unless of course you would be happy doing whatever it is you do for a living being paid the same wage as the Eastern European?

I almost agree with everything you said except it's the government regulations that are raising the prices much more than the salaries of the workers. Sure salaries are higher than Eastern Europe but the government regulations and taxes are the real culprit, IMO of course.

I have loaded quite a few 223/556 and have never seen, nor myself had a slam fire with Winchester, CCI or Remington 6 1/2 standard primers. I rarely use CCI 41's or Rem 7 1/2 for the 223 in an AR. The point I was trying to make is that they must be soft and somewhat sensitive.

I'm not so sure i agree with all of the wage/tax positions just mentioned... Our standard of living is much more expensive than eastern Europe and I believe with their socialist society they may be heavily taxed to pay for all those free subsidies like health and housing. Although we have lots of taxes and fees from the top down, many of the federal regulations also cost businesses big bucks to stay in business. Then there are the wall street analysts that put expectations on the company profits, inflation and don't forget the millions in CEO salaries and bonuses whether they perform or not. So, it's no wonder US goods cost so much more than stuff made overseas - if they didn't then why did so many companies outsource their production?

I rather like having some of those Fed primer trays on hand for exactly the reason you dislike them.
they make for good disposable sanding blocks and have enough meat to them for use in some electronics projects.
Unlike Remingtons minimalist packaging, they have enough to them to live on for re-purposed.

I buy USA stuff and the name is Federal, They are top of the line for a match round. I try to support the workers in the USA when ever I can.
