Wolf Russian 9mm steel case ammo

The local Scheel's here in Great Falls, Montana had about 300-400 50 count boxes selling for $15.99 a box with a limit of 10.

This got me thinking, are other countries having the same kind of ammo shortage we are?

Everyone who buys ammo retail is having shortage.

At least they have some ammo and decent prices . Most outlets have little to none at $1.00 per round.

It was the only 9mm they had. I don't really need any, got about 1000 rounds on hand, but I think i'm going back tomorrow and get me some. They also had about the same amount of .223 in 20 count boxes for $8.99 a box.

About 10 + yrs ago, I bought a 1000 rds of Wolff steel case 9mm in a sealed tin for just in case. I have another of .223 for the same reason. I hope I never have to open either because that would mean I have run out of other better factory alternatives and all my reloading supplies.
By that time, the world would not be a pretty place.

I was given a bunch of Wolf steel cased 9mm by a friend after he sold his 9mm pistol. I shot it all up in my 9mm AR with no issues. I don't shoot steel cased ammo in any of my handguns.

I use Wolf. Where I live, I shoot on the desert and this time of year it is hard to recover brass in the snow and in the summer some of the critters that live under the bushes take offence at being invaded by hands looking for reloadable brass. I try to have a few boxes in assorted calibers just for plinking on the desert.

I've shot a lot of steel case ammo in a variety of guns over the years. Very few issues.... first it's dirty, doesn't seal the chamber as well as brass so more fouling. Not a big issue and a good cleaning takes care of it after a range session. I have seen the occasional stuck round in other people's rifles but haven't encountered it in mine.

Second issue is that some handguns simply won't cycle some steel case ammo. Could be a number of causes but I've really only seen it in small pocket type semi-auto pistols. All the full sized pistols I've had have not had any problems running steel case. So if I find a deal on it I will buy and shoot it.

Now, as to the OP's question about other countries I suspect they are not seeing an ammo crunch like we are in the US..... Main reason being most other countries have far fewer shooters, per capita, than we do here and certainly wouldn't see a huge influx of new shooters affecting demand doing to the regulations surrounding gun ownership. Takes a while to become a gun owner in many countries.

Now those people in other countries may see a shortage of some ammo if foreign sources are diverted for US sales and US supplies aren't available in their location. But, since there are fewer shooters to start with, I would suspect that there would be less impact on them than we see here.

At this point, id have bought some. Especially the .223

I have run a few boxes of steel .380 through a surplus Beretta without any problems. It is Berdan primed, so not easily reloadable unless one is set up with the Berdan components. It put holes in the target, all I needed it to do. I think I paid about $17/box this summer, only local .380 I could find. I think it was Wolfe ammo, maybe Tulana.

I picked up a case of Tula back when things started getting crazy, maybe June or July. It was right around when $200 cases of brass became extinct, I came across the Tula for about $160 and said hmmm, maybe better than nothing at all.
Mind you, I have plenty of brass cased, but we all know this year has been funny-feeling regarding ammo.

I've shot some, deciding to use it before dipping into my stash of good stuff. It goes bang fine in my CZ 75, groups decently at 10 yds... good enough for plinking. In my son's P226 DAK, he had a couple light strikes that took a second pull of the trigger, but they all shot fine on that. Guessing the primers are maybe a bit hard.

I've shot a bunch of steel 45 acp and it's all been fine, no concerns about any of it now.

In my ARs and C308 (Cetme), have shot a good bit in 223 and 308 respectively, and again, it's been fine. The Cetme mangles cases anyway.

Two questions:

I found a case of Wolf 9mm steel-case and I was wondering if the Berdan primers they use are harder than most.


Are there any problems with shooting it in a titanium cylinder of my S&W 986?

Oh heck if you can find it buy it and shoot it. I don't consider it any worse on the chamber than aluminum cases. Our country loaded steel cased 45 back in WWII. Saving strategic metals I guess. I have shot it(and loaded it too) with no issues. Yep the combloc stuff IS a bit dirtier...brush and a swab cleaning patches or whatever...I have had no issues with any I have shot... And I bought a bunch of Tulammo last March for 2.88 a box
