A Mississippi man decided he'd had enough. He took a .380 pistol and shot his wife straight through the forehead and then turned the gun on himself. The bullet went completely through the woman's brain and exited the back of her skull.
Amazingly, the woman survived and was up, walking and talking when police arrived!
The man didn't.

Mississippi woman alert, coherent after being shot in the head
Thursday, April 16, 2009 By CHERIE WARDStaff Reporter
PASCAGOULA — A rural woman shocked deputies when they found her alert and coherent after being shot in the head at close range by her husband.

She even made a cup of tea, according to one of the deputies.

"There's no way she should be alive," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd said. "The bullet completely passed straight through her brain. It entered at the middle of her forehead and exited from the back of her head. She should be dead. It's one of the most unreal, bizarre things I've ever seen."

Byrd said that Donald Ray Sexton shot his wife Tammy in the forehead at 12:10 a.m. Tuesday, then went to the back porch of their home on Billy Hinton Road in the Harleston community in north Jackson County and fatally shot himself.

Deputies believe that the couple had been arguing.

Tammy Sexton, 47, was airlifted to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. A hospital representative said Wednesday afternoon that Sexton was listed in fair condition in the intensive care unit.

Lee Kesterson, a neurosurgeon with the Singing River Health System, said that a gunshot victim's alertness after a head wound signals their ability to survive it.

"If a person is in a comatose state, chances of survival are poor," he said.

Byrd said a young relative was in the home when the shootings occurred and ran to a neighbor for help.

"When deputies got there, they thought they were responding to a murder-suicide," Byrd said. "But, she was up walking around and talking."

Sheriff's Sgt. Leon Rushing said Tammy Sexton told detectives she had "just made some tea and was fine."

Rushing said she appeared slightly disoriented but was alert and responsive to questions.

"She had a cup of tea on her nightstand," Rushing said. "That was evidence that she had gone to the microwave and made tea. I'm sure she made it after she was shot."

Police recovered a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun, which they believe was the pistol that 57-year-old Donald Sexton used in the shootings, Byrd said.

Rushing said hospital officials told him Wednesday that doctors were predicting that Tammy Sexton would make a full recovery.

"I've seen many, many head wounds over the years, and people just don't survive getting shot in the head," Byrd said. "She's an absolute miracle."

Mississippi women are hard headed. We had one several years ago shot in a similar manner with a .22 cal. The bullet entered her forehead and was stopped by the rear of her skull. She went back to work a few weeks later.

I had an OK man (and wife) paint my house the last time - ~8-9 yr ago. His wife walked with a limp, carried her right arm in an odd way, and had a odd-shaped head, viewable through her short hair. She was walking up her front stairs when someone ran up and shot her in the back of the head with a .45 ACP. She is only one of a few such survivors. No one was ever arrested. They left OK when she recovered - after quite a while in a coma. I wish I knew where they were - he was a great painter!

Bo Gritz (70), the Special Forces Colonel who Rambo's controller was loosely based on - and talked Randy Weaver off Ruby Ridge - had a low period in his life. He attempted suicide with his service 1911 - reportedly aimed the .45 at his chest and pulled the trigger. If memory serves me, the ball round bounced off his sternum and travelled under the muscles in his chest wall, exiting via his armpit. His daughter found him - unconscious but fine. I guess Someone still had a job for him. Interesting fellow - a 'real' American.

That gal was fortunate. I mentioned this to a rather non-pc friend. His retort was simple... "She started out a woman - there weren't much to hit up there no how!". I'll tell him to get his asbestos undies on.

Wouldn't it be kinda weird sitting there having tea with a gal with a bullet hole through her head. I mean, how could you have a serious conversation with her? You would have to sneak a peek now and then. Jeez.

On the other hand, I've seen a successful suicide via .22 Short derringer. The barrel had to be only 1.5" long at most, and he shot himself in the temple, the bullet going completely through his head. The bullet was recovered on the floor next to his feet where he had a pile of unpaid bills.

You can never be too sure of what will and will not get the job done.

The local Police Officer shot in the back of the head in January here was able to walk to the pitchers mound at opening day of the AAA affiliates baseball game and throw out the first pitch a week ago or so..
Unassisted by anyone and using only a cane in one hand. Quite a recovery so far from a gunshot that went through his brain completely with the bullet lodging into his skull in front.
Like DS says,,you never can tell what will play out with a gunshot wound.

The sole survivor of the Wichita massacre was shot in the back of the head (execution style) with a Davis auto. I think it was a .380, but could have been a .32. The bullet was partially deflected by her metal hair clip, so she survived, her friends didn't.
