This gun only comes with the Hogue rubber, and I would like something nicer. Keep in mind I have the Pro, and elected to not pay extra for the PC, so if I shell out cash for new wood grips, they have to be superior to the grips that come with the PC. I realize "nicer" and "superior" is subjective, but... If you had this gun, and had medium sized hands, which wood grips would YOU look into picking up (and why)?

I am new to this so be easy on me... :)

First, welcome to the forum.
Now, stocks (grips) are a very personal item. Many of us have a box full of ones we tried and rejected for various reasons.
Trying as many as possible is always best, but impossible for most of us.
Personally, I dislike most rubber ones. The only exception were the (no longer made) Uncle Mike's.
Many on the forum (myself included) prefer one or another of the Ahrends products. My preference is the Tactical Finger Groove type. Fits my hand well. This is what all my "shooter" guns now wear.

Thanks for the warm welcome, and the tip to look into Ahrends brand of wood grips. After a little research I am interested in the following set: Ahrends S&W, N Frame, SQ Butt, Cocobolo - FINGER GROOVE - Top Gun Supply

Is $60 a good price on these, and what are the pros/cons of the poly finish vs to hand rubbed oil finish? I was thinking I could refinish the poly version as outlined in the following thread (if I didn't end up caring for it): http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1980-present/208820-ahrends-finish-fix-3.html

I have had no problems (so far) with the finish on many Ahrends. If you are considering these premium wood grips, it is nice to see the exact grain you will be getting BEFORE buying. To this end, all of mine have come from Terri Redman (Gripseller) she is on both GB and EB. Standard price is $60, same as anywhere else and besides seeing the set you will get, she combines shipping. She has always given me superb service.

I second Terri (gripseller) and Ahrends grips! Just search for Ahrends on ebay.

Here is my 627 pro, along with it's then stablemates, a 5" PC627JM and a 2 5/8" PC 627 UDR. Top down, they are 'Bang!' (Jerry Miculek) grips, Ahrends retro targets in cocobolo, and Ahrends rounded non-fg grips.

Here are my 627's now:

After trying everything, I actually like the Jerry Miculek grips - great/fast/non-fidgety grab. Everone is different!

Hi,

I like Ahrends tactical grips, but without the finger grooves, but that's my personal preferance. I bought several sets from Terri, and she is by far the best seller I met - she was very helpful and did all she could to assist me getting the parcel through the german customs... You won't go wrong with Ahrends grips and with Terri Redman.

regards
Ulrich

If youre willing to spend... Nothing beats Nills!

Hi,

sorry to contradict: I dumped all my Nills in favour of Ahrends... Surely my personal thing, but I know of other gun owners who weren't too happy with their Nills. They are well made, and not cheap too, but I prefer the Ahrends smooth tactical on my K-Frame, and I even like the Pachmayr on my 1911 more than Nills "Master".
