Typically a 265g cast GCSWC (Lyman 429244) over 22g W296 and a WLP.
Plinking round is a cast 250g SWC (Lyman 429421) over 7g W231 and a WLP.

Four inch 686 with 158 grain hollowpoints. It gets used on woodchucks and coyotes and, occasionally, sick racoons.
Most of the time I carry a 22cal in the woods. But if I carry a "big gun" it's this ol' 1917 (parkerized before I got it) and a bag-O-moonclips.
I feel well protected against Indiana bears.

For midwest woods walking, I carry a 3" Model 60 .357 with a full lugged barrel and adjustable sights. I load it with 125 grain Golden Sabers. Most likely targets are groundhogs, coyotes, etc. When purposely out for squirrels I will carry a Model 35, 18, or 648 loaded with WRF cartridges.
That ought to put the hurt on a pasture pig. Don

I'll carry almost any handgun I have in the woods,from my old Colt .38 to the biggest I have-which right now is my 460ES .460 mag!
I know some are saying "what the hell are you gonna shoot in WV with a .460?!" well,pretty much anything!
But the list of now is:
S&W 4506 loaded with some kind of 230gr JHP.
S&W 460 ES loaded with (presently) .454 300gr JHP
Colt Army Special .38
NAA Pug .22 mag (more of a back up,always rides with one of the bigger guns)

25-13 w 300jsp's at about 1100fps, will go through anything, also 629-6 3" or 629-4 6" w 300 gr keiths at about 1000 fps, again lots of penetration. Carry a speedloader full of shotshells for grouse/etc. with both calibers

M57 4". .41 mag
May also carry this G22. Gotta find a holster that will accept the light attached.
Most likely this 442 will be pocketed with a cylinder full of +P Gold Dot SB loads.
The Airweight is mainly for the ride home. Why is it that you must always go through rough areas on the way to hunt?

On the tractor/4 wheeler/lawn mower/ woods walk and deer hunting. Depends on my mood. Could be a 1911 or a N-frame or a K-frame or a J-frame or a carbine.
Most of the time I carry a 44 Mag S&W of some sort...
However I sometimes carry an Accurized Colt 1911, with Bomar sights.
I always have some Speer Shotshells for which ever hand gun I am carrying.
I have shot rabbits, squirrels, quail and grouse with both 44 Mag and 45 ACP shotshells, as well as snakes. They work great.

I work in the woods, in the timber business, I front pocket carry a 340sc loaded with homerolled 357 GD SB @ 1125fps, all day, everyday.
Use to b snakes were most likely to b shot, but I have gotten soft in the last year and just let them slither away.

For years my favorite woods bumming, hiking, camping companion has been my Model 60-4. A few years ago wild hogs have moved into our hunting club property so, while roaming those woods, I've upped the ante to my 629-4 MG.
Squirrel season opens up here in GA in a couple weeks and I'm looking forward to trying out my recently acquired 1969 Marlin 39A Mountie. It'll be backed up with the Mtn Gun to handle any wayward hogs and wild dogs.

if its the only gun im carrying in the woods its a Glock 10mm or S&W 681,66,13 loaded heavy.
if im toting a rifle or shotgun i'll carry a 4" S&W 63.

I have switched from a smith 632 power port to a glock 29SF loaded with 10mm 175grain Winchester Silvertips. Twice the capacity, heavier bullet, a little less velocity. Weather proof, easier to get multiple shots off, and night sites easier to pick up in a hurry.

When I'm woods bumming, I like that term, I usually carry my Neos .22 6" barrel, and a 12ga. mossberg 500, and a large variety of shells for the shotgun, a few slugs, nitro mag 4's and a few birdshot like 8's. seems to cover all the bases here in the Ozark m

I dont do it right. I have too many guns to call just one my woods gun. I would be better off if I did have just one and stuck with it. I probley would be a better shot if I did. First, I am lazy and not into hikeing on foot. I am into rideing my atv, so I can haul any gun. I dont like takeing some of my most exspendsive or rare guns quading as its a dirty and dusty sport. I have been carrying a old m&p a lot. Also a .32 H&R mag ruger single six. First off, I am not afraid of bears. Never seen any around here. I hate snakes, but really a rock would probley do the job.
That leaves "Idiots". I think there is far more of them than bears or panthers. Anyway I have packed all my adult life and just feel more comfortable with a good defendse revolver in the boonies or on the road.
While I have a few, I never have been heavy into autos. I like .45 colt and .44 specials and have a batch of both. I also am a single action guy. In the boonies I dont see the need for fast reloading or fast shooting. Single actions are fine. Years ago I carried just a old model 60 a lot with a snake load on top. It potentialy almost done me in once. I got in a fracus. Two guys had t-boned me leaveing a bar and ran. Long story short, I and a GF boxed them up in a parking building in LA. They delibertly hit us several more times trying to get away. I was irate and they had locked themselves in the car. I hammered the drivers window with my 60. Yeah I know dumb, but I did. We came out of the deal OK, probley helped that the driver had warrants out, dont know for what. Anyway I later found that by hiting the car window, it knocked the shot capsel forward partialy into the barrel and tied up my gun! I dont do that idea anymore. This happened downtown LA about 40 years ago. They would jack up the jail and let it down on me in later years!
Anyway truth is you can dance with whatever gun ya brung! My colt single actions are too exspendsive to pack and dirty, so I often carry my smith 24-3 4" or a old HD I had converted to .44 special. Lately I been looking at a nice 4" model 25-5 I have to start takeing along. I just cant see takeing my 3" 66-3 or 2 1/2" python in the back country as I can as eaisly pack a 4" or longer in my quad box. I also have a .357 puma lever that I recently got and plan on takeing that.

It was my 625MG in .45 Colt in a belt holster... now, it's my 296 in a Mika pocket holster - with a 240gr LSWC first, followed by four 200gr Gold Dots. Less is more...
