NO LIVE LINKS TO GENERAL NEWS STORIES, PLEASE!

A Nigerian man with links to Al Qaeda was overpowered by passengers and crew as he tried to set off an explosive device onboard a flight from the Netherlands to the US, officials say.

United States authorities have labelled the incident, on board the flight carrying 278 people, "an attempted act of terrorism".

The suspect suffered third-degree burns and was taken into custody.

The passengers, two of whom suffered minor injuries, disembarked safely from the Delta Air Lines plane in Detroit, after the flight which had departed from Amsterdam.

"There was a pop. And everybody got a little bit startled. And then we looked around and saw nothing," said Syed Jafry, who was sitting three rows behind the suspected terrorist.

"After a few seconds or so, then there was a little bit of light, a little bit of - kind of flameish light and there was fire. And people began to panic almost. And everybody was rushing towards that area and tried to get water, a blanket and fire extinguisher."

People nearby tried to put the flame out, but it went a bit higher.

Mr Jafry says a young man sitting three or four rows behind him ran over and tackled the suspected terrorist.

"He took care of that suspect. He handled him pretty good," Mr Jafry said.

"There was a little bit, obviously, of a struggle. And I think he took it under control."

The cabin crew helped drag the man to the front of the plane and isolate him from the rest of the passengers.

"I don't recall that he was struggling," Mr Jafry told CNN. "He appeared to be stunned... he was kind of more surprised."

Michelle Kellerman was one of the passengers who heard the pop.

"We saw the fear in the flight attendants eyes and then they grabbed the fire extinguisher," she told CNN.

People were yelling for water but then the crew rushed forward with a fire extinguisher and put the fire out, said Zina Saiga.

"And one guy put a lock on his head and dragged him to the front, his pants down - I heard the pants were on fire," she said. "I thought they pulled it down so he cannot run."

Ms Keepman, said the incident was "terrifying."

"I thought - I think we all thought we weren't going to land, we weren't going to make it," she said.

Obama concerned

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama, who is on vacation in Hawaii, is apparently monitoring the situation.

"We believe this was an attempted act of terrorism," a White House official said on condition of anonymity.

Representative Peter King, who sits on the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said the explosive device was "fairly sophisticated," and the suspect was Abdul Mudallad, a 23-year-old Nigerian.

"When it did go off, he himself was seriously injured. He has third degree burns. It appears to be different from what we've encountered before," Mr King told Fox News.

Speaking to CNN, Mr King, a New York Republican, said Mudallad "did appear in a database as far as having a terrorist connection."

"My understanding is... that he does have Al Qaeda connections, certainly extremist terrorist connections and his name popped up pretty quickly" in a search of intelligence data bases, Mr King said.

Mudallad was not on a "no-fly" list but his name was in a database indicating "a significant terrorist connection," Mr King said.

The Transportation Security Administration said the aircraft was moved to a remote area at Detroit's airport where all baggage was being re-screened.

Citing unnamed US officials, the Wall Street Journal said Mudallad had told investigators Al Qaeda operatives in Yemen had given him the device and instructions on how to detonate it.

But NBC, citing anti-terrorism officials, said Mudallad "claims to have been acting on his own."

The aircraft, Northwest Airlines flight 253, was an Airbus 330 carrying 278 passengers. Delta Air Lines has taken over Northwest.

Mr King said the suspect started his journey in Nigeria.

"How sophisticated he was, I don't know," Mr King said. "But again, it was a fairly sophisticated device. I would say we dropped the ball on this one."

"Passengers may notice additional screening measures put into place to ensure the safety of the travelling public on domestic and international flights," the Department of Homeland Security said a statement.

Larger plot

Mr King said there was an investigation into whether the incident may have been part of a larger plot. There is a "world-wide alert to make sure this is not part of a larger overall scheme," he said.

The attempt appeared similar to one eight years ago when a British-born man, Richard Reid, tried but failed to blow up a trans-Atlantic jumbo jet by lighting explosives stuffed into his shoes.

Reid, a follower of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, is serving a life sentence in a US prison.

It also is the latest in a string of terrorism-related plots in the United States over the past few months, including one in which an Afghan-born man was arrested in September on charges he planned to set off bombs in the United States.

US officials have repeatedly warned about terrorism attacks from overseas and have grown increasingly worried about the potential for home-grown plots.

How do they get on a plane in the first place.

<Rant>How, indeed. I've lost my patience with DHS. Billions spent, and they cannot seem to get their sh*t together.

I'm pretty respectful of civil liberties. . .for American citizens. For these other folks, my plan is simple: if you are an African, an Arab, a Persian, have a Muslim-sounding name, or give me the heeby-jeebies, even a little bit, when I look you in the eye, you don't get a visa, and you don't get into the United States. Screw 'em.

By the way, hats off to the passenger who took matters into his own hands.

Too bad there's no ejection seats on passenger aircraft. I personally would hit the button and give scumbags like this the opportunity to learn what it is like to fall fifteen or twenty thousand feet without a parachute.</Rant>

I think we need more ethnic/national profiling instead of less. Anything to the contrary is pure BS. If you think otherwise, you need to wake up and get a life.

If I were of any of these "targeted" groups, I would be more than happy to prove to anyone that I was not one of these clowns.

I would love to hear the "Muslim community", in mass, stand up and denounce this.

Have they?........................You know the answer to that!

I agree......screw 'em.

DHS cannot control the security in foreign airports. Everyone in Europe knows that the security is lax at many airports.

Having been badly burned a long time ago I can testify it's one of the most painful (and long lasting painful) injuries you can receive. God forgive me, but I hope his b*lls got burned good.

Since the flight originated outside the continental U.S., there are no sky marshals allowed. We can't emplane marshals on foreign soil.

The "bomber" was on one "no fly" list, but not on any other. (Gee, that would be enough for me. Take a hike, bozo. No frequent flier miles.)

There was no metal to set off any alarms. Plastics only. It takes a machine costing about $1 million. Xray machines cost $5K.

Maybe it's time to tell other countries that if we don't have U.S. air marshals on board, their flights don't enter U.S. airspace. Security is only as good as the weakest link.

Amen to that, respectfully. We are at war. At least I think so. "Civil Liberties" need to be suspended or abolished under the the circumstances. At least 50% of this country is "Godless" or at least forgotten the Creator. Therefore at least 50% of the population does not understand the "Holy War" declared on the U.S.. The fact that the muslims (is there any case lower than lower case) hide here under the auspices of religious/racial freedom shows me how victimized this country has allowed itself to become. Why are auto factories not turning out every form of military vehicle necessary to win the war? Why aren't the lazy bum/druggy/gang jerks wandering my neighborhood in the service? Worst case they could be human shields. An isolationist policy toward the world, at this point in time could be no worse then the current policy of love thy neighbor till we die.

Whenever I see one these goofy muslim women with their heads ragged up, I want to grab a hold of one end of the rag and spin em around like a top. Is that wrong? I'll bet it's no worse than what hubby does.
What woman accepts this demeaning religion? Why doesn't NOW stand up for them, or educate them into the 21st century?

Hmmm?
A piece of vermin tries to kill a plane load of people!
And fails!!!!
I wonder how many pots of HOT coffee you could make before the plane landed?
It would be a shame if 20-30 pots of hot coffee was accidentally spilled on him while he was tied to his seat!

I am not sure that this correct. I do believe that US air marshals are routinely placed on-board in-bound US flights, at least American flag carriers. From this morning's New York Times:

"Amsterdam has long been an airport of concern for American aviation security officials, like other major gateways in Europe, including London, Brussels and Frankfurt, where the T.S.A. sees an unusually large number of hits from people on so-called “selectee” or “no-fly” lists associated with security threats, one former senior Homeland Security official said.

As a result of such concerns, United States-bound flights from these cities are more likely to have air marshals aboard — teams that typically travel in pairs. But that apparently was not the case on Northwest 253, said Edmund S. Hawley, who served as administrator for the Transportation Security Administration until January 2009. If the air marshals were present, they would certainly have broken their cover and apprehended the suspect, Mr. Hawley said."

That muslam POS shouldn't have been alive upon arrival. Hats off to the passenger that jumped him.

If he was on a plane from Israel, he might have been tied in his seat and his throat cut before the plane landed.

That's the way it should be......

From the flakey accounts I have read on this, it appears the guy was attempting to initiate a Goldschmidt reaction. (also known by another name, you look it up)

Supposedly he was seated above a fuel tank , if so, this would have caused a molten ball of metal to pass through to the fuel tank. It woudn't have been pretty had he been sucessful.

Not a sophiscated device (as being reported), and it can be considered as a binary device. I remember reading about it in Chem class (1960's) and thought I'd try it. I can remember to this day how powerful it was.

Simple powders, no nitratates involved (our enemies are getting around our defenses), so our favorite bomb sniffers won't pick it up.

Strip searches and cavity searches are the only 100% effective tools. Boy, am I looking forward to my next commercial flight (not).

The Feds Knew About This Guy. . .

The New York Times and other sources here and in Nigeria are reporting this morning that several weeks ago, the father of the failed bomber--himself a prominent Nigerian banker--went to the US embassy in Lagos and voiced his concerns about his son's increasingly extremist religious views. This roughly coincides with the failed bomber--one Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab--telling his father that he was severing ties with the family, and moving to Yemen, which is where he says he received the device he tried to detonate and training in how to use it. As a result of the father's report, federal authorities in Washington opened an investigative file and Mr. Abdulmutallab’s name ended up in the American intelligence community’s central repository of information on known or suspected international terrorists.

I mean, folks, you do not have to be James Bond to figure this one out. This is the pattern of a man about to become a "martyr." Knowing all of this, why did our intelligence and homeland security agencies let this man on a US flag carrier in-bound to the United States?

A couple of years ago TSA seized a jar of home-made chili paste that I was bringing back into the country from China. It was, after all, "a liquid, aerosol, or gel" those fools insisted. I was threatened with arrest when I complained that the seizure was inappropriate and unnecessary.

Yes folks, America is safe is from home-made Chinese chili paste, but not from jihadis carrying PETN and apparently thermite onto American airliners. The failed bomber is reported to have been sitting directly over the aircraft's fuel tank. It is pretty clear what the plan was, at least to my mind.

After spending billions of our dollars and massively and arbitrarily infringing on our civil liberties, the intelligence and Ministry of Homeland Security people still do not have it right.

The truth is that until they install the equipment (at ~ $1 million per machine) capable of detecting these non-nitrate explosives and incendiaries, the only 100% sure approach is a thorough strip search and body cavity examination of every person who gets on an airplane. It would also help if TSA would simply use the intelligence it is given on a silver platter.

I am going to be watching this one very closely, folks, and all I can say is that the temperature in Yemen had better climb pretty far, pretty fast, and pretty soon, and that equal heat better be applied to the people in this country in charge of making the air travel safety system work.

I am posting below a photo of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab so that he doesn't remain anonymous.
