Would you buy a 454 Casull, just because?

454 Casull

The 454 Casull caliber is just plain cool. It has an interesting history as does the gun it was originally made for. I now have two model 83's and I see no end in sight. Nobody says you need to shoot full house loads, either. That's the great thing about handloads.

snapping twig-
Can you post a pic of yours? I saw you mention it in the thread in the lounge.

I have the T'SOB mount, Warne rings, and a Leupold 2x EER. It all came on mine.

An old pic of it-

You bet!

These shots show the lanyard mounts, porting and allen screw for the replaceable forcing cone.

My T'SOB mount came with 3 rings. Not using it right now, so here it is with the bead/notch.

There are lots of guys here with .454's. I don't have one, but I do have a F/A .475 Linebaugh, which is sorta a big brother to it.

Before buying a Ruger, you should be aware that they have had problems with cases sticking in the chambers. It isn't a safety issue though. It's just the nature of the ss they use. It's a 465 carpenter series grade of ss, and it is springy by nature.

Brian Pearce has covered this issue several times now in Handloader. He talked to the Ruger tech, who in turn told him that was the way the metal behaved. It moves outwards under the high pressure, then springs back, which causes cases to be hard to extract some, if not all the time.

The .454 is quite a serious round, and will handle anything that walks.

I have only heard of that issue with the six cylinder .480 Ruger and when they went to a five cylinder .480 that problem went away. If this is also with the .454 this would be the first I have heard of it.

Like I mentioned, it has been covered in Handloader several times now. Even though the chamber walls are thicker on the .454 version of the SRH, it is a higher pressure round by quite a wide margin compared to the .480. The .480's pressure as set by SAAMI is 48,000 psi MAP, while the .454 is entered at 65,000psi MAP. Factory loads for both run several thousand psi below these figures on average though. Far more people have complained about the .454 version than the .480 version.

According to Ruger, even though they announced the 5 hole SRH 480, they never released any since they had problems during production. Whether any actually made it out the door, I can't say, but I was actually watching for one to come along. If Ruger would have built a 5 holer on the SBH frame instead, they would have sold a ton of them. The.480 is a darn good round when handloaded, and should have gotten a better shake.

I have fired one so at least a few were made. It was a hoss of a revolver. I came pretty close to copying the youtube vid of guy who eats gun in recoil. I'm not a recoil junky though. I'm perfectly happy with 240 gr at 1100 to 1200 from a .44 magnum. I'm more in line with if I ever need more than that I will carry a rifle. It was a rush though.

Snapping Twig-

Thanks for the pics! I love looking at any gun, but F/A's are in a class by themselves.
The Warne rings I have really do a good job tying down that scope. They hold it in place with no problems while firing full house loads through the .475.

I am sending it back to F/A to have them lop the barrel down to 6". They really look good with the 6" barrel IMO, especially with the octagonal barrel, they balance better for me personally, and they are easier to pack in a holster. What kind of sling setup do you have for that? Have a pic of it?

Was it a 7.5" or the 9.5" version? I would really have liked to seen one in person. I probably would own it though:o:eek:;):D
