Would you ride in a driverless Uber?

A friend just got back from Scottsdale, AZ and said they called for an Uber to take them some place and the car showed up without a driver. They got in and it took them to where they wanted to go and there was no voice recording or anything confirming their destination they just trusted it and it worked just fine. I knew this was coming but I'm thinking I might want to wait a while longer to see that the driverless vehicles have a proven safety record. With Uber you may not have a choice because my friend didn't know she wasn't getting a human to drive her.

I would. If you think about it, you don't really know the "Uber" driver anyways, so a big gamble there. For that matter, you get on a plane..who knows who is piloting it..if anyone. Machines I trust..humans..not so much.

Cue update to the old spiritual: "Somethimes I Feel Like a a Driverless Car"

I think I'd find it a bit freaky. Can you talk to "it" if it gets lost or misdirected? Like checkouts at the store, I prefer the human element. And given how easy it is to hack into cars and steal them, I can see the possibility of hijacking an Uber + passenger.

I guess you could shoot it if it ran amok, but that would risk starting a thread about "the best caliber for a Uber", and we really don't want to go there, do we?

There's no guarantee that a typical Uber driver is any safer, but I'll wait until the technology matures a little more. However, computers don't have mouths to feed or student loan payments, so no tip required. :D

no, any computer driven device will eventually get hacked.
