Aye Coast Guard we're all for you!"

Thanks for your service!

Ya gotta go out. You don't have to come back.

My son is in the Coast Guard Reserve. Matter of fact he is doing his two weeks active as I type. He was assigned a PSU and spent a year in Gitmo and currently is doing his duty at the Lake Pontchartrain station. I asked him when he was down in Gitmo driving a patrol boat what he would do in case something big happened. He said that they had standing orders to run back to the harbor and tell the Navy :D
Coast guard has my utmost respect together with the Merchant Marine (my father in law was in the Merchant Marine during WWII).

Congratulations on your service

Here's a little something that all of us who sailed on ships large or small can take comfort in: Psalm 107:23-31 (King James Version of the Bible):

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;
These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.
For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.
They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.
They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit's end.
Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.
Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Semper Paratus, shipmate... I never indulged in the rivalry between the Navy and the Coast Gaurd. Maybe a little gentle kidding, but the Oceans of the world are big enough for all of us!!

By the way...July 30th will mark 52 years ago that I joined the Navy...and I come from a Navy family.

Best Regards, Les

Gripgrabber, got you by a little while. Nov. 18th 1968 was my day to shove off for the CG. Only spent 7 years in though. May have stayed all 20 except , the last 2 and a half I was in, I was assigned to the Navy as an AE instructor in Millington Tn. Zoomy had screwed the Navy up so bad, when it came re-up time I said I was just going to go home. Like you, lots of good memories, some hard to believe experiences and some good friends. Living here at the edge of the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic', the Southern terminus of NC's Outer Banks, I have much admiration for the USCG.

The CG will always occupy a 'what if?' spot in my brain. Have often wondered if I'd pursued that as a career instead of LE.....who knows?

Anyway - Gripgrabber, thank you for your service.

Time flies, 47 years ago today I joined the US COAST GUARD! I liked it sooo much I stayed in for 20 years. A lot of great memories, and a lot of great shipmates!

Thanks for your service. In fifteen days it's my 29th anniversary. USAF. 4 days out of high school. Oh a northeastern boy experiencing basic during a San Antonio summer. Never left the southern us. Good times.

Congratulations, Chief!

My running mate in high school was the son of an Air Force Major who was involved in recruit training at Lackland AFB. The Major was an odd duck. He told us that if we joined the Air Force he would make sure we would regret the decision. My buddy went into the Navy and I joined Uncle Sam's Cool Group!

Not sure about all this. The OP says it was 47 years ago today. That was a Sunday! I know because 47 years ago yesterday I got married and it was a Saturday. Tell me about it being a long time!

Les, the Lord does work mysteriously. I'm killing time reading a thread with which I have no connection, and the Psalm you quote here speaks directly to me in regards to a storm through which my family and I are passing. The Lord will calm this storm as well.

The golden nuggets I find in this forum go far beyond blued steel.

God bless all of you who served, and thank you for the fellowship I find here.

SEMPER PARATUS

Graduated HS in June 1959 at 17.5 y.o. Enlisted in the Corps on 9 Sep 1959. Had to have my parental consent. Discharged on 9 Sep 1989. Hard to believe that I have been retired for almost as long as I served.

To all the old salts out there, Semper Fi.

My father in law was Coast Guard LT. This is a photo taken the day he picked up a LST in Pittsburg and took it to the Pacific.

This is a drawing we found after he died. I would have liked to hear about it.

47 years ago yesterday I arrived at MCRD San Diego for recruit training more commonly referred to as Boot Camp. I stayed 8 years and finished with another 14 as an Army National Guardsman.
