Wrong Firing Pin

A few years ago I ordered a firing pin for my CS9 from Midway USA to keep as a spare because I figured that someday the 3rd gen parts supply will dry up. I saw that there were two firing pins available that they list as CS9 compatible, a stainless steel one, and one with a black finish. Not that the finish really matters much to me, but I ordered the stainless steel pin because I have the stainless steel CS9. When I got the firing pin, I realized that it was too long. I contacted Midway and they sent me the other firing pin that is shorter. I pointed out that they should correct it on their website so others don't buy the wrong part. I guess I was nieve in thinking that they would fix it on their website even though it maybe the fault of S&W saying that the long one is CS9 compatible. The thing that was more than just a little irritating was that I got the impression that the person did not believe me while explaining to me how these parts are often interchangeable between models. Anyways I'm posting this so that it may prevent someone from ordering the wrong part, or have some spare firing pins stored away somewhere that they may want to inspect and make sure they have the right part. If you go to Midway and find the S&W firing pin part#534023, the CS9 is listed as a compatible model, but it's not.

Yeah, if a vendor doesn't use the same part number as is used by the gun maker for the original factory part, it may be difficult to tell if you're getting the correct part. (A further wrinkle may be whether a vendor employee, or even the parts people at the gun maker, grabbed the right part out of the right bin, or the wrong part that ended up in the 'right' labeled bin. ;) )

Here are some 3rd gen FP's for the .45 (and 10) and 9/.40 guns.
In this pic the 2 on top (stainless) are for the .45. Note the difference in shank length and the overall length compared to the 9/.40 FP's (bottom 2, black).

I have more 9/.40 FP's than .45 FP's. ;)

Now, in the second pic, also notice that the FP springs are different for the .45 and 9/.40 FP's. Duh, right? :ROFLMAO: (In the 2 FP's off to the far left in the pic, 9/.40 FP is on the left & the .45 FP is on the right.)

I only have the black 9/.40 FP's in my new parts. I'd have to go through the bins of some older/used parts I kept to see if I had any of the stainless 9/.40 FP's. S&W offered 2 FP's for the 9/.40 guns, meaning one black #273130000 FIRING PIN; and one stainless #106360000 FIRING PIN $7.63 (2013 retail prices); but only one stainless #067670000 FIRING PIN for the .45's , at least when I was getting them and keeping track of them. The 4505 did have a separate FP part #206130000 FIRING PIN, unlike the one listed for the 4506 & 645. My swag would be it might've been blue/black? Dunno, as I never took a 4505 down, nor called to ask about the part for that specific model. :)

Yes, Midway is wrong on that PN#.

Midway# 534023 is S&W# 067670000 which is the firing pin for about (37) large frame 3rd Gen & a few 2nd Gen pistols.

The CS9 is on the medium frame & the two S&W PN# that their parts catalog shows is for it are:

- #273130000 which is MidwayUSA #998049, fits about (63) 3rd Gens, including the CS9
- #106360000 is the 2nd one, which MidwayUSA does not have in its catalog, that S&W shows is also for the CS9
