WWII Vets Honor Flights

Just in case that any WWII vet from Oklahoma(several other states have the same type of program, don't know who) is not aware, Oklahoma Honor Flights provide a no cost flight to and from D.C. to visit the WWII Memorial.
I talked with a person involved with the program and they still have over five hundred still on the list to go and anticipate completion this year. It is the hope that they will then be able to take the Korean War Vets next and then the Vietnam Vets after that.
I have several friends who have gone and they said they have never experienced such treatment and received so much respect. I am not going for two reasons. I cannot leave my wife for over a few hours and I am sick of flying. I got a lot of air time in the Navy, flew a lot of test flights as a flight engineer at TAFB and then put in a lot hours flying on commercial aircraft. Made a vow I would never fly again and intend to keep it.

This is a great program. Active in SC. I sent my grandaughter as escort and one Vet last fall. Will send my daughter and one Vet in May. (One eccort for each two Vets.) I was lucky as I was in between Korea and Vietnam. They had a great time and the Vets ran my grandaughter ragged trying to keep up with them.

My uncle in wisconsin went on it a year or two ago. My cousin went with him. I think the rules are you are suppose to be pushed around in a wheel chair by your sponser that go`s with you. Both said it really was nice! I think they left in the early a.m. and returned late that evening. Uncle Art was a MP and was in the bulge. Once told me he was assigned to drive general patton a few times. He was a dog man. I think he is 94 now. He was in the very first draft of our area.

I have escorted the vets to the airport two times last year. The vets get on buses at a Shriner hall for the trip to the airport. Both times we have had about sixty units, 30 motors and 30 cars from all around different departments leading the buses to the airport. What a sight to see all of the blue lights at 5 am going down the expressway.

When we pull into the airport the Air force and Sea Bee's will be standing at attention to welcome them.

When they come home a lot of civilians and a band from the Sea Bees will great them. They really enjoy their trip up to Washington.

I have been told it costs about 850 dollars for each veteran.

This service is very active here; my old boss went, one of my high school teachers, and some others from my home area who I can't recall at the moment. I've heard nothing but rave reviews of the whole thing. They treat those vets like kings every step of the way. If I remember correctly, some active duty service people sometimes greet them at the airport on the return trip with salutes and the whole nine yards.
