This is probably something that everyone except me knows the answer, but what is the significance of this "X" that's stamped on the cylinder face of my 657-2?

I always assumed it was a mark to properly install and time the ejector mechanism

S&W stamped a “V” on the back of stainless cylinders to identify the material for the polishing/finishing department. They stamped an “N” on guns that were to be nickeled and an “H” on Highway Patrolman cylinders. Perhaps that “X” is just a poorly stamped “V”.

You may be correct about the poor stamping job. Looking very closely at the cylinder I can see how it's possible that the lines may have just overlapped a bit.
Thanks!

I looked at 2 different 657-2's last weekend at a gun show by 2 different dealers. Each one had an X plainly stamped on the cylinder. They were reasonably priced but I passed on them because neither dealer (or myself) knew what the X meant. Both dealers are a reasonable drive from my home. I hope someone can answer our question about the X factor here. lol

Looks like you got a real rarity there -- a condemned revolver that somehow eluded the crusher and got shipped out...

I certainly wouldn't have passed one up (let alone two) because of the X, I was just curious if it had a known significance.
