I recently purchased both pistols. Both were purchase for concealed carry, eventually. I've run about 200 rounds through the Smith and 75 through the Springfield. Yesterday I took both to the range for a little informal side by side shooting and comparison.

S&W Shield - Has given no failures of any kind in 200 rounds. The grip feels good, although just a bit thin. Not a so much as to be a problem. The trigger pull on this pistol is excellent, almost as good as the LE Module trigger on my H&K USP 40 S&W when I was with the PD until 2006. Trigger travel is short (for a striker fired pistol), smooth and light. Using the standard sights with this pistol I shoot just a little low at 21 feet, maybe 3 inches. Windage is perfect. The two 7 round and 1 8 round magazines were stiff to load, but are getting easier as they are used. Same for "racking" the slide; very stiff at first, but easier now. The "slide stop" which I use as a "slide release" as on my other self-loaders works easier after about 50 rounds. Initially I could not easily release the slide from full back with my thumb. Now I can, which is my preferred method of closing the slide. Takedown for cleaning, etc is a bit cumbersome with a little yellow lever that must be lowered to remove the slide. I'm getting used to that.

Springfield XD-s - I've had one FTF in 75 rounds, and I am not sure why. That happened at about the 50th round, when using the 7 round magazine that was staggered Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ and Gold Dot 124 gr JHP (non plus P). I THINK the pistol did not go fully into battery. I don't normally stagger magazines like that, but I was using up some ammo and tried that. Might be a factor, but I don't see how. Now I'll have to start again with "qualifying" this pistol for carry. Anyway, I fired another 25 rounds of the Blazer Brass without incident. The trigger pull on the Springfield is long and heavy, but still smooth. In spite of that, my XD-S is a little more accurate at 21 feet than my Shield. The sights are also perfectly adjusted for this range. I really like the feel of the XD-s in my hand. It feels a bit thicker or hand filling in my smallish hand than does the Shield. Neither is a criticism, as I'll quickly get used to either. The one 7 round and one 8 round magazines I have for this pistol functioned well and are easier to load than the Shield's. The slide stop (aka release) is easier to manipulate than that of the Shield, even considering the difference in the number of rounds fired in the two. The fit and finish of the magazines seems a bit better than the Springfield, although both are very good I think. I thought I'd like the Springfield's sights better than the Smith's, but turns out when I shoot them I like them both the same. Take down on the Springfield is different from most of my other full sized self-loaders (S&W, SIG, H&K, Colt), but again, not a problem. It has take down quirks like the Shield does.

I'm interested in hear from others who own both pistols. And especially from anyone who has had a FTF as I did. I have never had that happen with any pistol other than a 1911, and that was definitely a magazine issue.

I'm posting this in the S&W Forum also.

While I don't own both, I did shoot the XD-S45 and the Shield9 Side-By-Side back in '12 when they 1st came out. The Shield won out and I bought the Shield. The main difference for me, was the perceived recoil.

While the XD-S was just as accurate and grouping was just as tight as the Shield, there was a major difference in comfort. To me, the Shield's recoil felt mild, like a G26, while the XD-S45's recoil was harsh enough that I had to stop shooting it after 40 rounds. I did have a couple FTEs with the XD-S45, but I believe that was due to hand/wrist discomfort.

When the XD-S9 came out, I compared it to my Shield, figuring/hoping that the perceived recoil would be better than that of the XD-S45. Once again, it came down to comfort. While my Shield is an All-Day-Shooter, again, I had to stop shooting the XD-S due to hand/wrist discomfort.

I have to say, that before I got the Shield, I was carrying the Kel-Tec PF-9, so I was used to having a CC pistol with snappy recoil. Back then, at each range session, I'd shoot the PF-9 Just Enough to stay proficient with it, then I'd put it away and shoot my XDMc, XD-Service, G19, or G26. Now that I have the Shield, I can shoot it all day and sometimes leave my XD/XDMc/G19/G26 at home.

While I can shoot the XD-S9 and XD-S45 just as well as my Shield and I enjoy shooting other XD products, I really don't want another CC pistol that I'd need to 'Shoot a Little and Carry a Lot', when I have a CC pistol that's an 'All Day Shooter'. :)

I had a Shield 9mm. Fired about 300 trouble free rounds thru it. Accuracy was good. Sold it to a good friend, so I still get the chance to shoot it. I bought an XDs9. Accuracy was about the same as the Shield, perceived recoil was slightly less. The XD felt better in my hand. Fired over 500 trouble free rounds thru this one. Also bought an XDs45 during that same time frame. The .45 is now my edc while both 9's are gone.
The XDs models fit me better than the shield and the .45 recoil does not (to me) feel any different.

I really didn't notice any difference in recoil between my two, but I have heard others say the "aggressive" grip material on the XD-S makes it less pleasant to shot repeatedly than the Shield.

Thanks for your input. I have been toying with the idea of a compact 45 acp like the XD, but I figured the recoil would not be of much interest to me. I have a couple of full sized 45 acp pistols that I enjoy shooting, but I don't think a smaller version would work for me.

Interesting how different people have different perceptions of the recoil between the two 9mm pistols. I think it must be grip shape? And also interesting that you've moved on to 45s. I think I will stick with the 9mm for carry, but I do enjoy shooting full sized 45s. I have a Clark Colt 1911 set up for bullseye competition that is a joy to shoot with handloaded 185 gr swagged SWC bullets. Accuracy is unreal and recoil is not much different that a 22!
