Does anyone have any experience with a XS Big Dot sight for a 640-1? I like to shoot this gun but the dark front sight (or more likely my eyes) doesn't seem up to the job. Thanks.

I've got one on my 640-1 and 242. Love it. Easy installation with a drill press. White dot really stands out, you won't have any trouble seeing it.

XS Sights does make a "regular-dot" for J-frames, too. I had one of each and I personally prefer the regular-dot over the Big-Dot.....so, I opted to put the regular-dot on all of my J-frames.

I wanted to put one on mine, XS stated my dove tail takes a third gen semi auto XS sight and it sits too low to mount?

I have one on a 340sc and it is perfect for the gun. Easy to install, I think I had to open up the existing hole just a mite as I remember.

On my 340 you push out a roll pin, make the pin hole a little bigger, insert the new sight, and push in the new pin. I did it 7 years or so ago but I think that was the routine. I didn't even use a drill press, just a drill in a pin vice. XS will supply the correct sight for the gun you specify.

Steve,

I put a set on my wife's 640-1 carry gun when she started complaining about not being able to see the sights. (getting older ain't for wimps!)

So - a XS Big Dot front sight was installed, and she loves it. She just puts the golf ball on the center of the target, and shoots - works great. (It is NOT a sight for shooting small groups, it is a sight for fast shooting)

Here is a pic...

Hope this helps,

I have a Ruger LCR that came with the BIG DOT. I like it for fast target acquisition. I didn't order it for a target piece, just a BUG.

I put one on mine in the late 90's. Easy to see but not as precise. It still glows. 640 is hard to beat imho for a CCW. More miles on mine than any handgun I have ever had.
