I have had Big Dots on several pistols, and find that I like the fast pickup with my 67 year old eyes. I have noticed that they now make one considerably less expensive without the tritium feature.

Anyone used these? How do they compare with the night sight version?

I figure if I have light enough to shoot, I could probably see the big white dot OK. Any thoughts?

Scatter:

I have XS Big Dot on my Shield and I like the sight. I am much younger but I have never been blessed with good eyes.

The tritium in my front sight is such a small part of the overall sight I don't think you will notice much difference..

If it is not your ccw I would go for it.

Scatter,

I am near sighted and have astigmatism. I have progressive lenses but the traditional three dot systems seem to be getting more difficult to use. Are you finding the big dot system itself easier to see? How much difference have you noticed?

Thanks

Quite a bit, although I'd have to say it's not really a target sight. There's no missing that front sight, though. Like looking at a golf ball.

Thanks, I've been thinking about trying them for some time, I think you convinced me.

I put XS sights on everything. Even ordered one to stick over my new shotgun's bead. Love them!

Haven't tried the non-tritium version, but unless you need it for the darkness, the only thing you see is the white anyway. Even in dim light, that big white ball shows up.

Just wondering Russ why you are making the distinction of perhaps not using these sights on a carry gun?

I was referring to the night sight vs the non night sight version of XS Big Dot.

If I was installing XS on my ccw I would opt for the night sight version.

I believe due to Scatter's poor eye sight he was considering XS fpr his target gun and I wad trying to say if it is not your ccw the XS without tritium would be fine because in sunlight you can't see the pin size tritium anyway.

Personally, I would not install XS Big Dot on my target pistols so the XS without the tritium would be a no go for me.

You may consider this as an option to the XS system. It is just as easy for your eyes to pick up, and much easier to shoot small groups while on the range. They now have an orange front sight option that works great.

If you want to shoot decent groups, then go for something other than the XS system. I had the sights on two pistols and removed them after a year.

For close in fast shooting, I don't really even look at the sights.

I agree XS Big Dot are not target sights

My reason for XS on my Shield was two prong.

1) Quick target acquisition especially with poor eye sight

2) Due to the Shield's height the low profile rear XS sight is better suited for quick pocket draw over stock notch and post wearing 34x32 slacks.

I gotcha, that's kinda what i thought you were talking about....I've got the tritium big dot front sight on my M&P9 fs, which i do carry on occassion.

I am a serious fan of the XS big dot. Have them on several handguns. As mentioned above they are not for precision range work. In fact if you use them as if for real you will group much better on any type target. But on a CCW weapon I think they are extremely good, I always qualify higher with them than any other sight system. I have both night and regular front sights and they seem to work equally well. In the ideal I would like the night dot at night.

Forgive the long story I am about to tell....

I am a right-hand shooter, but left-eye dominant. Last month began a bizarre medical journey which I will not go into detail about, other than to say I went blind in my left eye. My vision, although slowly returning, is still so poorly impacted that I have to wear a patch over that eye, or I see double. (hopefully, this is all temporary....and just an odd blip in the radar of my life...no worries!)

Anyhoo, two weeks ago it struck me. It may not be very responsible to be carrying my pistol every day when shooting with only one, lesser eye. I had no idea if I could safely deploy the firearm if necessary. So, off to the range I went. It was about time to cycle through my two magazines of carry ammo anyway, and I brought along another precious box of 50 fmj for good measure.

I have these really cool "bad guy" targets. Virtually a black silhouette, but when you look at the target up-close, you can see all of the vitals outlined in light grey. So, I sent the target out 25 feet and dumped off 8 rounds, 2x2x2x2.

With only one fairly nearsighted eye functioning and no glasses under my eye protection (because I rarely wear my glasses except for night driving, I don't practice defensive shooting with them), I can't tell from Adam where those shots have landed. So, before changing mags, I bring the target back. 7 were direct hits to the heart, one was on the line.

Were they a one inch, competition-style group? Nope. But they were right where they needed to be. One weak eye, 25 feet away....would have been a seriously dead bad guy.

This little problem of mine has been an opportunity, to further reinforce that I can entrust my life (and others') to XS Big Dots. Oh, and that I am perfectly safe and responsible in continuing to carry my beloved Shield 9 every day. :)

I've got big dots on my smith and my rugers. I've been very pleased with them as I can get on target faster.
