why would a police trade in make you nervous?these guns are shot very little and very well maintained

I have a police turn-in 5906 coming today, but I can't pick it up until tomorrow.:( I'll let you know how it turns out.

How about posting on the "Wanted to Buy" section on this Forum, in addition to keeping an eye out oon the Guns For Sale section?

Also, though it does require some patience, staying on top of the larger Internet sites can be productive. I've bought four 3rd Gen S&W pistols in the past six months from GB and Armslist with no troubles at all, and part of the fun is spotting what you want and either bidding on it or doing an outright buy if that's an option.

My impression -- though I haven't been directly in the market for a 5906, is that they are advertised regularly. Good luck on your search and welcome to the world of the 3rd Gens!

I've heard that police trade ins are decent for that reason because they're shot less and mostly only have finish wear, but from my understanding that depends on the officer who carried it. Some officers will shoot their sidearms a lot more than others. I wouldn't be as hesitant if I could see the thing in person before buying.

Nice find. Did you get one with a square or rounded off trigger guard?

Mine has the rounded. FWIW, it was $379 + shipping. I hem hawed too long and missed one for $339 from another seller.:(

Of course these prices are likely higher than say 6 months ago.

I was actually able to pick it up yesterday. Just some holster wear, nothing that won't rub out easily. Doesn't appear to have been fired much. Even the grips weren't in bad shape.

I think any time you can get a third gen in this good a condition for less than 4 bills, you have done very, very well for yourself! Congratulations (he said, enviously!)

I must be shopping at the wrong places.:D

Have you tried northwestfirearms.com or armslist.com? They can narrow the search closer to home. Also, try Cabela's gun library section. Here in Reno, they've got a nice 5906 and a nice 6906 for $450 each.

Re: Where the heck do I start?

I paid $250 for my police trade in 5946 about 2 years ago. Came with box and 2 mags and excellent condition.

In fact 95% of of my handguns are police trade ins.

I wouldnt worry about it. I have yet to see or hear of a shot out police gun

CDNN has 5906 police trade in for $339. I have one from a year ago and after a good cleaning and buff it was almost like new. Had Hogue grips that seemed new also. It's a great shooter

Hard to beat

3rd Generation S&W 9mm and 40 Cal.

I have a 5906 and a 4006 for sale. Posted now on GunAuction but may not sell. If interested send a message. Both have new night sights.

Summit firearms is another one that often has police trade ins. Good luck!

I have 4 police trade-ins from CDNN. 2 5906s (1 adj sight, 1 Novak), 2 6906s. I re-sprung them as soon as I got them because of mild oc disorder concerning guns. My kids and grand kids shoot them every couple of weeks. Still tight. Still accurate.
