YEAR OF MANUFACTURE BY SERIAL NUMBER?

Where can I find a manufacture date, serial number index for S&W handguns? It would be a big help in purchasing and cataloguing collections. I've found small exerts here and there but a uniformed index would be extremely helpful. I apologize if this has already been provided in a thread not computer savvy and couldn't find it.

Except in very few cases, actual production dates by serial number are not available. In the S&W world, ship dates are used for the "birth date" of revolvers (and semi-autos, for that matter).

Approximate production dates for postwar guns have been published, most notably in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson. The 5th Edition is the most recent and is available on Amazon.

Thanks I have one and I've seen lists quoted according to serial numbers and dates but they were stated as manufacture date ranges?
