Hi All

I just purchase a 686-6 revolver used. (1st revolver)

How could I find the age etc on the firearm, I see on S&W they can look it up at a $50.00 cost, I would rather buy ammo.

So the gun is a S&W .357 Magnum, Model 686-6, Caliber .357, 5" Barrel, Has Rappy on the side as well as a picture of one, Certificate says that this is a 686-6 Plus Pro Series, is this actually a Pro Series version?

There is no real look up

From a list in the Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson we can guesstimate 90%+ of the dates of manufacture

If you have the box for the firearm, we can 99%+ of the time tell you the exact date of manufacture

Based solely on serial number prefix I would guess this revolver was made in 2004

A Factory letter does not tell you the date of manufacture, it tells you the shipping date, where it was shipped to and any unusual information about your firearm. The fee has not been $50 for many years. There have been two price increases for the letters and currently the cost is $100
