Yet another model 10 question

New here, figure this is the place to find out about a Model 10(?) I picked up today. It has the 5" taper bbl. (my first Model 10, long ago, was the same thing) but on this one the only number in the upper yoke is a large European style 1 with a smaller 1 in a circle next to it. Lower half of yoke has six digit number with a large A below that and a smaller crooked w (I think) next to it, but not close. The numbers are not very well etched, tapering off on the last three. Serial number on butt starts C 428. Any ideas as to age and why it has odd marks. It is an exact duplicate of my 10-5 except for bbl. length and markings. Seems in remarkable shape, may have been re-blued, but I want a shooter not a collecter. Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

My list of serial #s shows your serial # 428xxx to be circa 1958-59. Hope this helps. M.L. Mosley

First off, welcome to the forum.

C428XXX ought to date from 1959, and thus really would be expected to be marked "MOD. 10" in the frame recess exposed when you open the cylinder. But if it's C428XX, then it would be a Military & Police model from about 1949.

How about clarifying that serial number and posting a photo or two?

Starts with C428? How about a hint as to how many numbers come after? Paranoia can be carried too far.

I still recall that one post offering the serial Cxxxxxxx. That was a good one.

Serial number is correct at C 4286xx. Six digits in all. Pix beyond my technical expertise (but my IT team will be back at end of week {the wife}). More interested in yoke numbers; every other S&W I've owned had model number in yoke (though all were post 70s). Thanks for all the help so far. Also displays two screws on side plate with standard grip and one in front of trigger guard.

That's not strictly speaking correct. A Model of 1905, 4th Change have what is known as the "long action" lockwork - all Military & Police revolvers with a "C" serial number prefix (as well as some very late "S" prefixed guns) have the modern "short action" and if early enough to not yet be marked as a Model 10 are generally regarded as simply a "pre-Model 10." However, I emphasize the serial number of yours is somewhat higher than would be expected to lack the Model 10 marking.

I found this post while searching for some answers to similar questions. The stamp on my gun's yoke is a "one" with a circle slightly below to the right and a number "4" in the circle. I also have the A with what looks like a crooked w. The serial number is C 427523

I'll keep an eye on this thread

Can't see the "A" that well, but it's there. Pretty good shot of the "1" and the blurred "O" with the "4" in it. Sorry, took it with my phone.

You're in the same ballpark as the OP as regards age. What's in the yoke doesn't matter if there is no MOD 10 stamped there (well could matter if it has been refinished by S&W). How about posting some more pictures so we can see the sweet thing?
