As you know a trip to the LGS can be a fun diversion, cost a lot. or maybe, just maybe you will find a little nugget.
I have been on the lookout for a Chiefs Special to fill my J frame void. My favorite types of revolvers are the ones that show some use, character as they say. Well I found one that filled the bill. I can't pick it up until Friday as I live in one of those backward states. Anyway here is a prison photo.
SN 7J64XX 71-72?

My apologies for not getting these sooner but while I was cleaning it up the mainspring swivel decided to jump ship. Took a day and a half to find it.
Anyway here is my first, new to me Model 36.

Congratulations, it looks like a nice one. If you only have to wait a few days consider yourself lucky. In my state I have to wait at least two full weeks.

Well I used to live in CA had to wait 15 days then. The wait here in IL is 72 hrs.

That’s horrible. I just go to my neighbors house after work and he does my transfer for me and I take it home.

Congrats on a nice Chiefs Special.

Based on others in the database, your serial number puts it in
1970 or 1971.

I'll be interested in knowing the serial number inside the right stock.
I would guess it is probably in the high 500000 or low 600000 range (1968).
Ok Bob, I will post it up when I get it out of hock!
I am curious though why would the stock number not be the revolvers SN?

From the Chiefs Special's introduction (1950) the models wore
stocks with a diamond around flush-mounted screw and nut
escutcheons (Photo 1).

In early 1966 the company issued an order to eliminate the
diamonds and countersink the escutcheons. Due to a large
inventory of the stocks with diamonds we don't start seeing the
new stocks until about 1968. Those stocks are like the ones on
your Chiefs Special (Photo 2).

At some point in 1969 the company shrunk the checking pattern
and changed the perimeter shape, too (Photo 3). Based on your
Chiefs' serial number, these are the ones it should have.

Along your Chiefs life someone probably changed the stocks.
Unfortunately a very common occurrence. That's the only
explanation for the stocks and butt serial numbers not
matching, and right now it's an idea in my mind's eye. We'll
see when you rescue your new revolver if I'm right.

Bob, I knew about the change from the diamonds stocks but I wasn’t aware they changed change them again later. As you say we will know tomorrow. Can’t pick it up until that afternoon (yes they factor in a complete 72 hrs. I have had them make me wait for 5 mins once.

Well score another one for the Two-Bit-Cowboy! Bob you were right on.
Removed the stocks and both are marked JRB. The right stock carries SN:628421! There is a small gouge in the RT stock and the alignment pin is elongated.
I will post up some pictures tomorrow.

The ruling politburo is doing their best to destroy what used to be a nice place to live.

Very nice Chiefs

Greetings from backward country

It's easy for you in the U.S. You just have to wait a few days or a week.

In Finland, we have to submit an application to the police for a gun permit. The permit costs over EUR 100. If you apply for several permits at the same time, the rest cost a little over EUR 50 / each.
For pistols and revolvers, you must submit a certificate that you have practiced shooting at least 10 times in the previous two years. This must be done every time you apply for a new permit.
The permit processing may take several months.
For the first permit, you must go to the police for an interview.
If the police do not issue a permit, they will still keep the permit fee.
A pistol or revolver cannot fit into a 13 cm x 18 cm box; if it does, it is a "pocket gun" which can currently only be obtained on a collection or work basis.
CCW was banned nationwide in 1998.
This is why many old pistols and revolvers are cheap in Finland.

I have had this mod 36 about 30 years

It's shippet about 1973-1974 if I rememberright.

Who years ago I find 36-1 3"
